Bolivar ferry bars Krishnas in horse-drawn wagon

PORT BOLIVAR - Krishna pilgrims traveling from Pennsylvania to Argentina by horse-drawn wagon have hit a snag in Texas.

The three Hare Krishna pilgrims were denied entry to the Port Bolivar ferry this week after traveling more than 2,000 miles from Pennsylvania. Texas Department of Transportation employees who manage the ferries told the travelers they would not be able to travel on the ferry to Galveston because it was illegal to bring unconfined animals or animal-powered vehicles aboard.

"This is a very rare situation, and I can't recall any other instance like this in 17 years," ferry operations manager William Mallini told The Galveston County Daily News in today's editions.

"Our journey is a sacrifice we do to glorify God," said Avadhuta Siromani, who is making the journey with his wife and another companion.

He said that the pilgrims had asked TxDOT employees at the ferry landing Wednesday night if it would be possible for special arrangements to be made.

The pilgrims decided to wait for help Thursday. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office arrived later with a borrowed livestock trailer to take the horses and their companions across the bay to the Oleander City.

Last time I looked, Galveston was still an Island.
It's not on the way to anywhere. Once you cross to it, you have to cross back to mainland Texas before you can go anywhere else.

Take another look at a map. When I drive to Houston from Port Arthur or New Orleans, I sometimes cut over to the Bolivar Peninsula and take the ferry over to Galveston Island. It is a bit of a shortcut and the ferry is free.

Once on Galveston Island, there is a bridge between the island and the mainland right up I45.

It is a long way back to I-10 once one gets to the ferry, however, so I can see why they did not want to back track. It was nice of the cops to help them out with the borrowed trailer. We Texans are friendly folks.

I know you can go that way, but it certainly isn't necessary.

The Krishnas are whining for publicity.

This is bewildering.
I always thought the Krishna only hung out in airports.
Hey AD, this isn't some kind of Amish splinter group, is it?
