Good question. I'm curious as to how the Honor Guard is selected for this duty. Maybe someone familiar with this things can answer.

Someone posted on that last night on the live thread. They're from the 3rd regiment(?) or something, specifically trained for these kinds of duties.

I can't speak of the other branches. But the Army soldiers you saw today on both coasts were members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry....The Old Guard.

They are the guardians of the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier.

They also conduct all interments at Arlington.

And on sad days like today...they are charged with burying our great leaders.

If I remember correctly the other branches of service have cimiliar kinds of honor guards based in D.C. and they draw from them for these type of ceremonies.

one of our friends was in the Army in the late 60's and VERY early 70's, his duty in the service was to prepare for the funeral in case Harry Truman died. That's all they did, was train and practice in case of his death.
