NYC's 'Son of Sam' Killer Denied Parole

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - David Berkowitz, the ``Son of Sam'' killer who terrorized New York City in the summer of 1977, was denied parole for a second time, officials said Friday.

Berkowitz is serving six consecutive 25-years-to-life sentences. Though he did not request parole, the issue is automatically considered every two years under state law.

The state Parole Board made its decision Wednesday.

``You caused irreparable harm to many victims and society was gripped in fear because of your acts,'' stated a summary of the hearing released Friday. The board noted that Berkowitz had a good record in prison programs, but the brutality of his acts require him to stay behind bars.

Berkowitz, a former postal worker, killed six people and wounded seven others beginning in 1976. It wasn't until the fourth attack in January 1977 that police noticed a pattern. Authorities said he targeted teen girls with long, dark hair and young couples.

His nickname came from a note he left at one crime scene that read: ``I am a monster. I am the Son of Sam.''

After his 1977 arrest, Berkowitz told police he was following the demonic orders of his neighbor's dog.

Berkowitz, 51, has since said that he has become a Christian and has a Web site filled with Christian-themed messages of remorse. In a 2002 letter to Gov. George Pataki, Berkowitz stated he had no interest in parole, saying, ``I can give you no good reason why I should even be considered.''

"Berkowitz stated he had no interest in parole, saying, ``I can give you no good reason why I should even be considered.''"

When a serial killer writes something of the above, why does the state even spend a dime on the parole review? Yeeeargh!!

It seems that the serial killer has more wisdom than the state.

Berkowitz, 51, has since said that he has become a Christian

I saw an interview with him once where he talked about this. He struck me as being very insincere. a complete phony. Not that I would believe a psyhcopathic killer anyway, but it was still interesting to see.

The trouble is that in the People's Republic of New York, completely insincere phonies tend to win elections. He'll get parole eventually.

One of my best friend's husband sat in the cell with this nut the night he was arrested. Every time they show clips of Berkowitz's arrest I see John, as a very young man, escorting him.

Ive seen similar interviews, and I come to a different conclusion. He is doing a great work within the prison walls with a "thriving ministry" and a heart for God. God will judge him one day and given the fact that he doesn't even request parole says alot for him.

I don't think so. Ted Bundy worked a suicide prevention hotline. His heart, like Berkowitz's, was thoroughly evil.

One of the characteristics associated with psychopaths is the ability to pretend to be ordinary people. It's often called, "the mask of sanity." Don't be fooled by outward appearances.

Fortunately, you're right about one thing: God won't be fooled.

He should be paroled, but under one condition: his hands be removed.

Good. Now change the law so they don't even consider parole for these creeps.

He should be paroled into the custody of his victims families and friends.
