Both officials said Kerry ... , sparing himself an outright rejection that would make his eventual running mate
look like a second choice. Probably should say "forth choice", (assuming Hillary was the first choice, Edwards was the second choice, and McCain was the third choice.)

Thank goodness. I know he had said earlier he would not accept the offer, and he wasn't leaving the party, but you never know.
