Suicidal Youths Turn to Hanging Instead of Guns

A new report finds that suicidal young people are less likely to use firearms to take their own lives, but the survey finds little comfort in the trend because they are turning to more readily available methods.

In the last decade, suffocation -- notably hanging -- has overtaken firearms as the most common way for adolescents to kill themselves, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

The greatest change was among youngsters between 10 and 14 years old, where suicide by suffocation occurred twice as frequently as suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot. Firearms were the most common method before 1997, the report found.

Among those 15 to 19 years of age, however, suffocation suicides also increased, but firearms remained the method of choice in 2001.

In other findings, the CDC reported that young people who attempted suicide were four times as likely to have been involved in a fistfight in the previous year. However, a third survey found that those who committed a school-related suicide between 1994 and 1999 had no history of fighting or otherwise getting into trouble with the police.

The report in the CDC publication Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report had some good news: Overall, the suicide rate among people 10 to 19 years of age dropped from 6.2 per 100,000 people in 1992 to 4.6 per 100,000 in 2001.

A friend's 19 year old niece did it by drinking Methyl alcohol. A real ugly way to go. She was a beautiful girl depressed by losing a boy friend.

If teens only knew how we 50 year olds long for those 'horrible' high school dilemmas again.

I think that most judicial hangings earlier than that incurred a slower death by asphyxiation.

A few weeks or months ago I read (here?) a news item about the exhumation (discovery?) of the graves of some hanging victims a few centuries. There were indicators that the deaths were, er, excruciatingly agonizing and slow -- I think they said up to a half-hour.

Should take some of the Liberal-Socialist whacko heat off the firearm industry & place it squarely where it belongs. ...on rope makers.

Without a doubt--we had some nutcase in Illinois last week randomly stabbing people at a shopping mall. A baby was killed in her mother's arms. We should definitely eliminate all manner of potential weapons--knives, rolling pins, ropes, dinner forks--whatever.

However, although I might have missed it in this article, the reality is that many of these so-called suicides are the result of a very popular sexual pursuit. These nuts will subject themselves to a state of hypoxia by hanging themselves which allegedly creates a more intense orgasm. Quite often things go wrong and the subject dies. This is a documented fact although I won't go into graphic, explicit or ugly details.

isn't it the case that hanging with the intent of instant dislocation at the atlanto-occipital joint and spinal cord disruption is a recent (19th century) invention? I think that most judicial hangings earlier than that incurred a slower death by asphyxiation.

No need to be a traditionalist about these things. Suicide is an expression of self-loathing, but torturing yourself to death is over-the-top.

Yes--we as a caring society must do something about all the potential instruments that may bring harm to an idiot population. You may have heard about the nut that ran amok at an Illinois shopping mall. He stabbed several people and killed a baby in her mother's arms.

If we want to buy into this Liberal-Socialist whacko thinking--we definitely need to register all household utensils, lawn tools, ropes and probably nail clippers. Oh, we should also ban tall buidlings and bridges, because someone just might jump off one of them. Give me a freaking break!!!!!!!!!!!
