Now he's singing "America the Beautiful" to Ronaldus Magnus.

That would explain it. He's got a gig to get to.

I loved it when he sang Georgia on my mind.

Some years ago, the Georgia General Assembly decided to drop the , by then, too quaint song, "Sweet Georgia Brown".

They selected "Georgia On My Mind" as sung by Ray Charles.

Not Willie Nelson, not Britney Spears, not by just anybody.

Ray Charles and nobody else.
Quite possibly the greatest "phrasist" of all time...even surpassing Sinatra.

America the Beautiful
Katherine Lee Bates

Oh, beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brother-hood from sea to shining sea.

Oh, beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern, impassioned stress
A thorough-fare of freedom beat across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law.

Oh, beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loves, and mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, and ev'ry gain divine.

Oh, beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brother-hood from sea to shining sea.

A tragedy would be if Bill Clinton would suddenly pass on now. Of course, we would be still be waiting for that third great person to pass on to finish the triad...

I bought my parents tickets to a Ray Charles concert for their anniversary. My Dad could do a better Ray Charles impersonation than Ray Charles could, if you know what I mean. He was in tears when I handed him the tickets. The concert was canceled. Of course I don't blame Ray, as a former professional musician myself I know he'd have loved to do the gig. It's the damn managers...

Thank you, Ray Charles' managers in 1982, for ruining my parents' anniversary.

Since both parents and Ray are now gone, I'm sure Ray is making up for this.

>> By law, no one should be allowed to do that song except Ray.

God Bless Ray Charles; but Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers also did a pretty good rendition of 'Georgia'.

Yep. I remember when I heard Willie Nelson singing "Georgia on My Mind," I screamed. By law, no one should be allowed to do that song except Ray.

LOL....see my post # 85

It ain't against the law in Georgia.....
but it ain't right.

I was fortunate enough to see Ray Charles in person in Las Vegas in 1994 while I was sitting at a black jack table at about 1:00 am. He walked past me, just 5 feet from me, with a Pepsi-girl on each arm, and he sat down at a nearby table. After a few minutes, he had the Pepsi girls escort him up to the small stage, where a house band was playing. He proceeded to sing a few songs with the band, just because he felt like it.

Needless to say, it was fabulous, and I felt so blessed to have been so close to greatness.
