WASHINGTON A House subcommittee told the administration Wednesday to rethink some of its plans for nuclear weapons, including development of a "bunker buster" warhead.
The panel refused to provide money for development of a nuclear bunker buster, a weapon that can destroy a deeply buried target. It also denied funding for research into the feasibility of a low-yield "mini-nuke" warhead and for work on a new plant to produce plutonium triggers for the warheads.
The programs, while relatively small in terms of funding during the fiscal year beginning in October, have been a priority of the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Energy Department agency responsible for the nation's nuclear stockpile.
"We put the brakes on a number of new nuclear weapons initiatives," said Rep. David Hobson, R-Ohio, the subcommittee chairman.
"The NNSA needs to take a time-out on new initiatives until it completes a review of its weapons complex in relations to security needs, budget constraints and a (recently completed) new stockpile plan," continued Hobson.

Yup..instead let's send in a couple brigades of grunts to dig 'em out, and take maybe 50% casualties.....man, that's MY idea of supporting the troops...
Rest assured our enemies havent quit building them.....and working on even more deadly WMD...
Peace Through Superior Firepower
Rep. David Hobson is a great fool.
But he did get his name in the
press.
This is insane.
What a ridiculous decision. Hastert and company better have a talk with these folks ... unless it's a plan to keep the nuke issue off the table until after the election.
While this stupid subcommittee is busy gutting national defense, they also voted to spend $100,000 in Robertson County Texas for an Army Corps of Engineers flood control study and $150,000+ for Texas A&M University for a nuclear counter-terrorism program. The money was requested by committee member Chet Edwards (D-TX) so he can try to buy a win in the 17th Congressional District of which Robertson County and Texas A&M are part of.
Tis, IMHO, is NOT about defense, or $..it's about the "nuclear" thing..
This is just a sub-committee, so I suspect you are correct.
House elections may change this sub-committe's membership.
Personally, I believe the research will go on w/funds cobbled together from various *dicretionary* programs.
This is a good reason to contact voters in this & the other representatives' districts, if you know any.
