A friend of mine taught his dog to "do his business" upon command. The word was a name.
I have a border collie that looks remarkably similar to the one in the photo. I didn't need a scientific study to know that not only do dogs understand language, they are sensitive to moods as well. If my dog sees our suitcase come out of the closet, she immediately gets very fidgety, and very clingy to the entire family because she knows she isn't going to see us for a few days. Dogs have incredible powers of perception, and understanding our spoken language is just the tip of the iceberg.
Not only that, I much prefer dogs over most people I know in politics.
