We used to sing the Battle Hymn in our church choir every memorial day. It's a splendid work, much more powerful than the National Anthem.

As I recall learning, there was quite a controversy as to whether the National Anthem or Battle Hymn should be the official song.

Apparently the Battle Hymn was deemed too 'aggressive', warlike.

It's a splendid work [the battle Hymn of the Republic], much more powerful than the National Anthem.

It is powerful, but too laden with Christian religiosity to be a national anthem (if that was your suggestion, perhaps it was not).Further, I find the Star Spangled Banner to be as moving and powerful. But that's me.
