Intel, China Co. to Cooperate on Systems

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - U.S. semiconductor giant Intel Corp. (INTC) and Shanghai-based Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd. plan to cooperate on software development, focusing on online home entertainment systems for the China market, the companies said Tuesday.

Intel and Shanda, a game developer whose shares are listed on the Nasdaq, have agreed to develop "online interactive entertainment" - mainly games - for a variety of devices, including computers, televisions and mobile phones, the companies said in a statement.

The statement gave no financial details or timetable for the deal, which is the first software development tie-up in China for Santa Clara, California-based Intel.

The companies plan to explore how Shanda's online data networking systems could be restructured using Intel hardware, the statement said. They will operate a joint testing center at Intel's facility in Shanghai.

"China's interactive entertainment market holds great potential," Chen Tianqiao, Shanda chairman and chief executive, said in the statement.

"Shanda's goal is to become an interactive entertainment content provider with international influence."

Shanda Interactive listed its shares on the New York Nasdaq stock market in May after an initial public offering of American Depository Shares that raised US$151.8 million.

for those who don't follow chinese pilfering its helpful to understand that in the last 16 months that chinese manufacturers have gone from owning 0 to about 60% of the chinese hand held telephone market.

where did the chinese companies get the expertise to elbow out the multinationals who have invested billions to develop the technologies to support the telephones and wouldn't just give the technology away.

one way the chinese have found to pilfer western technolgy is to set up their own standards and then require western companies to partner with a local chinese company to comply with the standards. the local chinese company then gets access to the underlying western technology and replicates it for the chinese market subsequently cutting out the wesetern company.

they tried to do this to intel but intel balked. and was sustained only after white house intervention.

for complicated reasons having to do with the hardware software interface--this latest "partnership" has the look of a back door way of achieving the same end.
