Dinesh D'Souza had a GREAT column in yesterday's NY Post about this.

Here's one of the good parts:

Arthur Schlesinger Jr. now:
"Reagan's admirers contend that his costly re-armament program caused the Soviet collapse. Maybe so; but surely the thing that did in the Russians was that time had proved communism an economic, political and moral disaster."

Arthur Schlesinger Jr. in 1982:
"Those in the United States who think the Soviet Union is on the verge of economic and social collapse" are "wishful thinkers who are only kidding themselves."

In the early 1980's, the Soviets spent billions constructing a sophisticated radar system to detect American bombers.

In the mid-1980's, we publicized our stealth fighters, and gave strong hints about our stealth bombers, both of which meant the previous Soviet investment was pretty much useless. They had to spend billions more to counteract this new threat.

In 1985, following a trip to Saudi Arabia by then Vice President George H. W. Bush, OPEC, led by the Saudis, began pumping much more oil. The price of crude oil fell from about $25 per barrel in mid 1985 to about $10 per barrel in 1986. Exports of oil were the main source of hard cash for the Soviet Union.

At about the same time, Regan announced the "Star Wars" initiative. Countering this new supposed threat would have cost the Soviets even more billions of dollars.

So, we took steps to make the Soviets invest more money, and at the same time, reduced their source of money.

These are three concrete steps that Regan/Bush engineered to defeat the Soviet Union.

Amazing that the "main stream" media can overlook them. Maybe that is why the "main stream" media is losing market share.
