Parcells Apologizes For 'Inappropriate Reference'
POSTED: 9:14 am EDT June 8, 2004 UPDATED: 9:15 am EDT June 8, 2004
IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells has apologized for calling the surprise plays used in practice "Jap plays."
Parcells used the characterization while telling reporters Monday of how his quarterbacks coach and defensive coordinator try to outdo each other.
It was an apparent reference to Japan's 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
Akira Kuboshima is the editor of Japan's American Football Magazine and was in the room when Parcells made the comment. He says he wasn't offended, but he believed some others would be. He also says he was surprised more by the reaction of other reporters than the comment.
Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple apologized on behalf of the organization.
Parcells later issued a statement, apologizing for the comment and calling it inappropriate.

Notice the Japanese reporter wasn't offended BUT 'special interest' groups were.

Well, it was a stupid thing to say. Just because you say "no offense, but..." before saying something doesn't automatically mean that nobody should take offense.

How soon before we have to get rid of "blitz" because it offends Germans? Or "red dog," because it demeans crimson canines?

Did y'all hear Jim Rome's take on this? He made him sound clintonesque in the apology.

Parcells is funny. He's like...no offense..but these Jap plays...I just love how rough and totally oblivious to sensitivity he is. It's refreshing.

Back in the day, it used to be common to say "You sneaky Jap" when someone surprised you...

Yeah don't you just love it when someone says "no offense but" and then they proceed to offend you.

PC is tiresome and offensive to me.
Ding, ding, ding, ding.... we have a winner!
That is the cornerstone of PC... "I'm offended". There is no quicker way to grind things to a halt than to claim that you take offense to something. In the PC crowd's mindset, taking offense is ALWAYS valid. You can't prove or say that someone isn't offended, therefore, you have to stop and apease the offended person.
It is the perfect implementation of minority rules. And it offends me as well. :)
