Exploiting Reagan's Death to Push Embryonic Stem Cell Research [Bush hears Jesus giving orders]

Leading journalists are exploiting Ronald Reagan's death to push for wider embryonic stem cell research as they emphasize how President George W. Bush is out of step with the issue. Serious people have serious disagreements about the balancing of the hope stem cell research holds for curing Alzheimer's versus the misuse of human life, but to leading media figures it presents just another way to bash Bush.

On Sunday, Washington Post television reviewer Tom Shales complained about how "Bush has refused to reconsider his opposition" to stem cell research, and ridiculed how "Bush thinks he hears Jesus giving him orders."

Monday morning on ABC's daytime show, The View, Barbara Walters assumed its beyond any dispute than Nancy Reagan has the correct position as she proclaimed that by fighting for stem cell research "she's going to change the lives of millions of people." Walters trumpeted how it's a "lasting contribution that she is making" and how "it's probably, maybe the most important contribution that she has made."

Highlighting how 58 Senators wrote a letter to President Bush urging him to support funding for "embryonic stem cell research, which could help find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease," Brokaw mildly scolded the Senators for not using Ronald Reagan's name. The "Senators made the request last Friday," Brokaw noted, "the day before President Reagan died. And there was no mention of him in their letter. Former First Lady Nancy Reagan has been actively promoting stem cell research."

"Out of her isolation, she found her cause," CBS's Sandra Hughes touted Monday night, "fighting for a cure. Recently, that's meant supporting stem cell research, putting her at odds with her own party."

Newsweek wants us to remember Reagan's [alleged] "uncaring about the emerging HIV/AIDS crisis"

Excerpt:
"In the White House, Reagan proved a maddeningly contradictory figure. An eloquent advocate of traditional values, he divorced his first wife and was often estranged from his children. A fierce advocate of balanced budgets, he never proposed one. A dedicated anti-communist, he reached out to the Soviet Union and helped end the cold war. An icon of button-down morality, he led an administration beleaguered by scandals. A man capable of nuanced thinking, he strongly believed in Armageddon. He mangled facts; caricatured welfare recipients; opened his 1980 presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Miss., in the county where three civil-rights workers had been murdered for trying to overthrow Jim Crow; presided over a dark recession in 1982-83;seemed uncaring about the emerging HIV/AIDS crisis, and, in the Iran-contra scandal, came perilously close to—and may have committed—impeachable offenses."

Shales and Walters sound like people who have a lot of money invested in some of those stem-cell research companies that are losing their shirts because:

1. they haven't discovered anything

2. they can't get government grants.

Talk about your welfare queens.

The body wasn't cold before the Atlanta newspaper ran a very long piece by William Safire on how great a Reagan legacy unrestricted stem-cell research would be.

By every account I have seen, fetal stem cell research is a dead end that has but one purpose: Promoting abortion.

Adult stem cell research seems to be where it's at, but it has one major failing: It is useless for promoting abortion.

Bush's stem-cell policy was short-sighted and is causing the U.S. to fall behind other nations in that area of scientific research. We should be a leader in all fields. Even Nancy recognizes the promise that stem-cells hold.

Fortunately, ESCs will not be needed to cure Alzheimer's, nor any other ailment.

"We should be a leader in all fields."

Hitler led the whole world in the field of brain surgery. Do you think we should have done what it took to beat him in that field?

ridiculed how "Bush thinks he hears Jesus giving him orders."

That speaks volumes of the state/status of the author. Proof that evil can appear innocuous...

My local liberal rag had an editorial about the issue as well this morning. I thought about writing a letter back to them pointing our the liberal hypocrisy. Just a few months ago, the liberal and the Rats were scolding Bush for using the death of 9-11 family members in his commercials to advance his cause. Now the same liberals are exploting President Reagan's death for their cause. Where's the outrage!

Doesn't stem cell research kill the embryo? I could be very wrong, but I thought I read it here on this site.

Bump. The research is moving to Japan, Korea, Europe and other places. Scientists have been lured overseas.
We will lose the technological lead from innovations and benefits arising from research in this area to other nations.

Yes, why don't we use our tax dollars to kill even more children. This country already aborts millions so what's a few thousand more? /sarcasm

If anything Stem Cell Research may promote Artificial Insemination since the Stem Cells that are used are from embryos that are never implanted. If not used for Stem Cell Research the embryos will either be destroyed or frozen for an indefinite amount of time.

What would you propose we do with the dozens of extra embryos that remain after a successful Artificial Insemination?

He reached out to the USSR? What's this guy smoking? He walked out of a summit. What's this about scandals? Someone tell me what scandals he had, because I am not old enough to remember them.

What's this about armageddon? Did Reagan believe in the end of the world? Or is this another spin?

Speaking from a feeble memory, not a knowledgeable recall:

Isn't the current state of research showing that stem cells from umbilical cords and even adults are actually useful and embryonic stem cells have yet to be shown as useful?

Isn't the current theory about the usefulness of embryonic stem cells lacking any support, to date, from experimental evidence?

I fail to see how Stem Cell Research will promote or use out tax dollars to kill more children.

First, Stem Cells are taken from embryos left over from the Artificial Insemination Process.

Do you propose we ban In-Vitro-Fertilization and deny infertile couples children?

How on earth does Stem Cell Research lead to more abortions?

Fetal stem cell research was not banned by Bush... SPENDING FEDERAL DOLLARS ON IT WAS. There's plenty of PRIVATE research going on.

Personally, I'd like to see the Fed Gov get out of the medical research funding biz, and reduce our tax burden appropriately.

Let citizens invest in private ventures they are interested in, rather than forcibly via unaccountable Federal subsidies!
