WASHINGTON - Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday he was not aware of any order by President Bush that would violate U.S. laws or treaties banning torture of military prisoners captured in Iraq or elsewhere in the war on terrorism.
This administration rejects torture, Ashcroft declared under tense questioning by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee

Also from the article:
The attorney general said the policy memo on this issue would not be made available to the committee, however.
I heard Pete Williams report on this story. He said conceivably Congress could subpoena the memo and if it was not turned over Ashcroft could be found in contempt of Congress. He then said that is unlikely.
"...Congress could subpoena the memo and if it was not turned over Ashcroft could be found in contempt of Congress. He then said that is unlikely."
Which is unlikely; the subpoena, the refusal, or the contempt - or all 3? So many choices, so little time.
The contempt of Congress step is unlikely.
A more accurate title might have been, "Democrat Senators Continue To Kick The Now All But Dead Abu Ghraib Prison Issue; Ayatollah Teddy and Brainless Biden Demanding To See Memos Congress Is Not Entitled To, Seeking To Nullify The Separation Of Powers Doctrine For Democrat Politicial Leverage".
"The contempt of Congress step is unlikely."
Only in the event that subpoena and refusal don't occur. If it gets to a refusal the contempt would seem a logical next step. That leaves the possibility of a refusal at slim to none.
I saw some of this earlier today; the Rats just can't let go.
As an aside, Ashcroft said during testimony that his son is in active military, just returned from the Gulf and will be returning shortly.
Considering there are some freepers who complain "no one in the administration has anyone in the military..." - we should remember this.
Congress needs to get back to it's job as per the US Constitution and let the Administration do it's job!!

Indeed.
Did you see at the MSNBC site? This headline is filed under the heading "Iraq Abuse Scandal". Then you can click on a "timeline" and the best part, "slideshow of abuse photos".
Oh, and an "Army report".
If they were entitled to the memo he'd give it to them.
If they're not (and they evidently are not) then he's not in contempt by not giving it them.
I heard that, too. I'm glad you saw some of this.
AKA dem porn.
Notice the mixing of apples and oranges, again, that any policy about treatment of prisoners is being strained to be interpreted as condoning of the gross activities that went on with the rogue group.
Disgusting. I'm just glad I didn't have to hear Kennedy. Ick
I was going to write a pithy reply about Fat Teddy loving to beat a dead horse - then I got a visual of him rumming around Palm Beach with no pants on, and I'm laughing too hard to type.
Edited to add: "rumming" was supposed to be "running" but it seems to fit even better, so in it stays.
Seem most likely reason to you?
Yeah, but let's not forget that there is more to all this than those photos...such as the death of Iraqi air force general Mowhoush when a military intel officer sat on his chest and suffocated him...

I'm not "forgetting". I'm not mixing up issues, either.
Kennedy's private stash? or did Barney let him borrow his?
As much as I dislike the guy, I must admit that Biden made mincemeat out of Ashcroft. Biden's emotion was real -- nothing like the usual crocodile emotion that comes from the left. And his argument was quite logical: we enter into these non-torture pacts so that our boys stay safe. Period.
