Thatcher flies out for Reagan funeral
The Daily Telegraph ^ | June 8, 2004 | Staff

Baroness Thatcher is leaving London for Washington to attend the funeral service for President Ronald Reagan, who died on Saturday aged 93.

The former Prime Minister recorded a seven-minute tribute last February to the man she has described as "one of my closest political and dearest personal friends". This tribute will be played during the service.

Afterwards, Lady Thatcher will fly in Air Force One to California for the burial.

A close friend of Lady Thatcher's said that she was at the opera at Glyndebourne on Saturday when she first heard the news of President Reagan's death.

How I admire this woman...

My favorite Maggie Memory-- she was speaking before Parliament or some such house (Brit politics confuse me)--and the traditional hectoring and jeering was heard from the commoners and aristos that make up the legislative body.

She seemed to be royally enjoying herself--giving as good as she got, a combative glint in her eye and a contemptuous sneer to her lips--thin lips in a bright maroon lipstick. I don't remember the subject of the debate--but I remember the lipstick.

The Iron Lady.

It's beautiful, isn't it?

(I'm missing the 80s more and more.)

"In 1990 she was awarded the Order of Merit and in 1994 she was made a Baroness."

It's our honor and privilege to have her attend Ivan. It means quite a lot.

Ivan, good to see you back! Thanks for the post & pics. I am so glad Maggie will attend the DC funeral services for RR. It is MOST fitting! I also like that she will give (albeit ontape) an eulogy. Perhaps the ONLY foreign former head of state thus honored ever...

Great! Margaret Thatcher was a strong leader and an opponent of socialist programs and ideals. She pretty much disseminated the trade unions in England through her economic reform. And she is in the same league as Ronald Reagan for her commitment to free trade, democracy, and freedom.

Thanks for posting those lovely photos as well.

Thanks so much for the news and all the pix!

I just love MT, like RR! What giants we had; indeed, another towering reason to miss the '80s. :-\

I am so happy Maggie will be coming. I pray God she will not be hurt by this trip! (Virtual tears here!) :*)

I thought no one would have been able to move as much today as Nancy Reagan did. That was until I saw Mrs. Thatcher viewing her old friend's casket tonight. I actually had tears streaming down my face, I was so moved to see her. She looked so sad. Geesh, I don't know how I'm going to handle Friday's service.
