We're living in a material world, and it turns out U.S. Rep. Lee Terry is a material guy.
Although he has railed against "filth" on television, the Republican plans to host a fund-raiser on Monday at a concert by pop culture envelope-pusher Madonna.
Democratic critics were quick to label Terry a "hypocrite," saying the Republican shouldn't preach about indecency on television while using the "Like a Virgin" star to raise money.
"Madonna's style hardly represents the family values that Representative Terry purports to support," said Barry Rubin, a spokesman for the Nebraska Democratic Party.
Terry says there's nothing hypocritical about the Washington, D.C., fund-raiser.
David Boomer, a spokesman for Terry's campaign, said Terry has criticized risqué and offensive behavior on television and not at concerts. Boomer also said the fund-raiser doesn't mean Terry supports Madonna's values.
"Madonna is a legitimate entertainer and just because we're attending a function doesn't mean we subscribe to the lyrics or the individual," Boomer said.
The concert fund-raiser also is typical in Washington, D.C., Boomer said.
Terry leased a block of prime tickets at the MCI Center, where Madonna is taking her "Reinvention World Tour." He then used the tickets to raise about $20,000 from people willing to pay $2,500 per couple or $1,500 per individual to attend the concert.
Terry is running for re-election in the Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District against Democrat Nancy Thompson.
Earlier this year, Terry was one of numerous outraged congressmen who asked the Federal Communications Commission to crack down on broadcasters who air "obscene, indecent or profane" material.
His comments came in the wake of the Janet Jackson Super Bowl furor.

Madonna, performing at a fundraiser for Rep. Terry? Hah! That's like Charleton Heston doing a dramatic reading at a Barney Frank fundraiser. It seems Mr. Terry has lost his way.
They love to pin the hypocrite label on everybody but themselves.
Which is easy to do when operating from a position of, "Hey, I don't claim to have any standards so you can't criticize me for violating them."
"Hey, I don't claim to have any standards so you can't criticize me for violating them." Just what I was going to point out but you beat me to it. Everytime I see someone pointing a finger I think of the Clinton Legacy.
I have discussions with the fine people in Nebr, where I was born & raised but having left many yrs ago I can not understand this Hagel. What does he have that keeps him in office/ Pls explain.
