WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) and Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites) will pull their campaign ads Friday, the day of former President Reagan's funeral.

The two campaigns are trying to avoid overt politicking during a time of national mourning. The Kerry campaign said Sunday that the candidate would take a week off the campaign trail. The Bush campaign announced Monday that Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s trip to Springfield, Mo., for a rally had been canceled in honor of Reagan.
The Bush campaign also plans to stop airing a hard-hitting television commercial this week that assails Kerry on the Patriot Act. The spot had been widely criticized for taking liberties with Kerry's position on the legislation that expanded the government's surveillance and detention powers following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Instead of that ad, Bush will run a commercial that trumpets recent job growth under his administration and that jabs Kerry, calling him a pessimist on the economic turnaround.
The ad, which is far less critical of Kerry than other commercials, started running Monday on national cable networks but also will air in media markets in 19 battleground states.
The funeral for Reagan will be held Friday at Washington's National Cathedral.

Will anyone notice the absence of a Kerry ad? It will certainly give the Mute button a rest.
Anything that calls a halt to campaigning, IMO, is a positive. Thanks, Dutch.
Pretty funny how APe describes the Presidents's ads so fully, inferring how hateful they are but gives not one smidgeon of example of an anti-Bush Kerry ad.
Well, WE NOTICED!!

Negative negative negative.
Well, Kerry, that putz (and other things I won't go into on a day I'm honoring President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan) isn't stopping anything here in Illinois today. I just saw one of his commercials and I must say he just appears like such a light-weight when compared to the lion we just lost and the lion who is currently in the White House and who takes up the Reagan standard.
before I can use the Mute button I need to use the On button. And that is rare.
Just saw a Jean-Francois Cheri ad on his "healthcare plan".
Gotta love Captain Nuance©.
When, exactly, is Miss Kerry going to do this? I just saw his "optimism" ad on FNC.
I've heard the stats on how many Bush ads are negative compared with Kerry, but I have wondered if they were using only candidate endorsed ads or if ANSWER ads have been included? Any Freepers out there know?
DK
He'll pull his ads....after he decides not to pull....before he decides to pull after all.
Just to be clear...we're talking about Kerry pulling his n.....ads.
Oh man, how will Americans learn Kerry is a Vietnam Vet?
