To the AP writer I say, Yes, and your point is . . . ?

Even an old guy like me has learned to use self checkout.

Now, if they can get the computer to say, "Thank you!"
(many clerks have forgotten how)

A thank you would be nice, but I wish the thing would just shut up. I find the voice prompts very annoying.

It does say thank you. I will see what lines are shorter and go there. Also if I have a lot of produce I find it easier just to go to the clerk and have him or her check me out. The library I go to also has self check out. But I rarely use it because I enjoy talking to the circ people.

The computer in Detroit does say "Thank You, please take your change".

BTW I'm glad you can use the self checkout. Lord knows I've been behind a few people that couldn't!!!

I feel bad for checkers that lose their jobs though.

That is why I am glad that the grocery store here does not allow the machine to give you your change. There is a special checker whose sole purpose is to give you your change once you go through the machine.

You get the best of both worlds....real quick checkout, but the person still has a job.
