I was stationed on board the USS Dwight D Eisenhower from 1983 until 1987. In June of 1984 we were asked to be a part of the D-Day Anniversary remembrances. Since I speak French (en peu) I was part of the shore party from the ship. I was at Pont du Hoc with President Reagan and Margaret Thatcher and was able to meet both of them.
I told President Reagan that my uncle (my father's brother) was killed during the invasion and was buried at the allied cemetary there. He was truly a gracious man. He consented and I had a picture taken with both President Reagan and Mrs. Thatcher and gave it to my father upon my return. My father passed away in 1991 and I have since been unable to locate the picture.
That's awesome!! I will always regret never having had the honor of meeting Reagan, a man who has influenced my life immeasurably.
