Boston, MA - At a press conference today John Rosenthal, Chair and Co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence, along with State Senator Jarrett Barrios, State Representative David Linsky, Boston Police Superintendent Paul Joyce and Director of Federal Legislation for the Brady Campaign, Tony Orza unveiled America's largest billboard, depicting a 150' X 30' AK-47 assault rifle and stating that this gun will be "Coming to a Home Near You" unless action is taken to renew the State and Federal Assault Weapon Bans.

On September 13, 2004, the federal ban on assault weapons such as the one shown on the billboard is set to expire. At this point, even though most Americans support the Assault Weapons Ban, Congress has made no effort to vote to extend it. And, although President Bush promised in his 2000 election campaign that he would extend the ban, he has also made no effort to do so.

With the Million Mom March coming to an unsuccessful close, I think this would be a good time to tackle the timeless argument surrounding the Second Amendment to our Constitution. There are three basic positions on the second amendment: those who believe in the absolute right to bear arms, those who believe in a modernization of the amendment and those who believe in its absolute abolition. While I can understand the argument for modernization of gun laws, the idea of effectively erasing our Second Amendment is ridiculous and dangerous. To disarm the people would be to effectively control them without the checks and balances from the citizens.

The Second Amendment, along with the others in the Bill of Rights, are not granted to us by the Constitution. Rather, they are guaranteed by the constitution because the rights enumerated are ours as humans for no one person or body to take and give as they please. The rights aren't given to us in the first place, so who is any one person or body to take them away? There are two extremely important reasons that this right was guaranteed. First, the government cannot be entrusted to constantly keep watch over the citizen's safety and protection of their property. The Supreme Court upheld that police departments are responsible for protecting society as a whole and not the individual, so in essence, you can expect society will benefit overall from their presence, but it is not guaranteed that you as an individual will. Being able to carry a weapon in self-defense insures that you are in control of your own life, not the mugger.

The second, and most important reason for the existence of the Second Amendment, is the protection of the people from tyrannical government and enemies of foreign origin. As a whole, the importance of an armed group of citizens to the security of our free state is imperative. While a highly improbable scenario, the ability for the people to form a new government from the collapsed remnants of a tyrannical one is not only our right, but our duty. Our Founding Fathers knew that no one system was perfect, so our current government is always in pursuit of a more perfect union, not a flawless one. I do not wish the destruction of the current government and, while it has it's problems, it serves the people better than any government in the world. To have a backup, however, if a body were to dissolve the Constitution, prepares us to take back our rights by any means necessary.

While some may disagree with me, I still believe that the Second Amendment is as important today as it was at its inception. To say the government is perfect is naive and to believe that the police can be there to protect you every minute of every day is presumptuous and potentially deadly. The issue of our right to keep and bear arms is demonstrated by the founding father's unanimous support of this right. Samuel Adams said, "the constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." With regards to firearms preserving our freedom, George Mason stated, "I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people ... to disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." They are not alone. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Thomas Paine, just to name a few, all supported viciously the right to keep and bear arms. They all experienced tyranny first-hand and did not wish their offspring to have to endure it ever.

Assault weapons ban to expire soon unless voters push renewal

The sight of Iraqis toting AK-47 assault rifles on the streets of Baghdad is common in the news, and a scary image (lions-tigers-bears...) . Thank goodness America's streets are safe from that kind of firepower, you might be thinking.
Nope, ain't what I am thinking. I'm thinking about how could we get OUR rights back to open carry full automatic AK's here in this Constitutional Republic, the good `ol u.S.A.
THAT is what I am thinking Gomer.

But the 10-year-old federal ban on assault rifles in the United States is about to expire on Sept. 13.

Congress has about 13 working days left to renew the assault weapons ban, otherwise the door will open once more for the manufacture and sale of AK-47s, Uzis, TEC-9s and other assault weapons in America. These are military style weapons that can fire bullets as fast as the shooter pulls the trigger.

The only purpose for these powerful weapons is to kill people as fast as possible.

Propaganda. Heck, it is old tired propaganda!

That's not a pleasant vision for America. These guns have no place in a civil society. They belong only in war zones.

(How many times have high crime areas here in the U.S. been refered to as "war zones?" The lame stream media just loves to use that kinda lingo...)

President Bush vowed to renew the ban when he was campaigning for the White House in 2000.

(LIE, he said he wouuld sign a bill if it reached his desk.)

But Bush hasn't lifted a finger to make it happen.

(Never said he would.)

Now that the time has come to act, he's playing political games as the pro-gun lobby smiles.

Bush says he'll sign a renewal of the ban if Congress passes it. But the speaker of the House reportedly is waiting for the president to ask the House to take action, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Since the assault weapons ban was first enacted in 1994, the use of such guns in crimes has fallen 66 percent. (???????, according to WHAT study?) Police groups across the nation have asked Congress to renew the ban, and polls show nearly 80 percent of Americans support its renewal,

. . . the Brady organization notes. Yesterday, former presidents Clinton, Carter and Ford (Moe, Currly and Larry?) and together urged Bush to renew the ban.

If you don't want to see the floodgates opened to assault weapons, today is the time to tell the president and your representatives in Congress to make sure the ban is renewed.

The politicians from the White House on down are hypnotized by the big money of the National Rifle Association which opposes the ban.

Hypnotized? Buwhahahahahahahahaha!

But ordinary citizens possess something more valuable than money - your vote. In this presidential election year, every vote is likely to count, just as it did in 2000. Ohio will be one of the key states that tips the balance and decides who will be the next president.

Your vote is your leverage and your ammunition in the battle to renew the federal ban on assault weapons.

Don't let the president and Congress allow the ban to slip away without notice.
