Porn 3X more popular than searches Tracking firm finds that 18.8% of U.S. Web visits were to 'adult' sites, 5.5% to top search engines. June 4, 2004: 4:18 PM EDT
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Online porn sites get about three times more visits than the top Web search engines, including market leader Google Inc., a research firm said Thursday.
Web sites categorized as "adult" accounted for about 18.8 percent of all Internet visits by U.S. users in the week ending May 29.
Meanwhile, the category that contains search engines dominated by Yahoo, MSN and Google, accounted for about 5.5 percent, according to Hitwise Inc., a California-based company that tracks Web use.
During that time, Google garnered 2.7 percent of all Web visits while Yahoo Search and MSN Search received 1.7 percent and 1.1 percent respectively, Bill Tancer, vice president of research at Hitwise, told Reuters.
Other large Hitwise categories include "Entertainment" at 8.0 percent, "Business and Finance" at 7.4 percent and "Shopping and Classifieds" at 7 percent.
Google is moving toward an initial public offering that is expected to be a blockbuster.

I guess Google decided not to sue. They had a little dust up a few months back.
I can't believe people pay for internet porn, what a waste.
Garbage in: garbage out. My concern is that the garbage is going to come out on the innocents not on the guilty. Censorship of this trash makes more sense to me than quarantining catttle for mad cow disease. There ought to be a law!
Is this news? Internet full of filth-just like it has been since it's inception.:) Film at 11!
That doesn't happen if you use Mozilla or Opera. ;->
bump for male friend...
Somehow I always thought that the most interested groups for these kinds of offerings would be those above 70 and below 12-13. I am baffled - why would there be any major interest from the rest of the population?
I've been running Firefox pretty much exclusively for almost a month now. Pop-ups are a thing of the past (so far).
I still need IE for anything that uses Java, like NOAA radar sites (Java "plug-in" is a ridiculous online install and more than 8 megs of Mozilla crashing crap, sad to say).
I don't know either. Most of the time it's just so damn ugly, I can't be bothered. Must have a big audience somewhere though.
Are you kidding? It's above 13-14 where kids really start becoming a problem surfing the net for porn and above 70 group would be where interest drops off the most.
It is the people in the most sexually active ages that are both the participants/actors and the audiences in porn.
Everyone I know spends all their time searching for porn. Does that count?
And is "3X" the same as "XXX"? That's the porn-quality they're all searching for.
It's all so confusing, this 21st Century.
Porn violators should help foot the bill for mental health and child protective services. Real fines might decrease the behavior and its results. I know fines have affected my driving.
So, If my husband and I tape us having sex and allow others to see it, we should have to pay fines?
Why???
