Pope and Bush meeting: full text of speeches

Pope John Paul II admonished President Bush for the torture of Iraqi prisoners by US troops during a meeting in Vatican City today. The full text of the speech, and Mr Bush's response, is below.

Mr President:

"I offer a warm welcome to you and to Mrs Bush, and to the distinguished Delegation accompanying you. I also extend a cordial and affectionate greeting to all the people of the United States whom you represent. I thank you for wishing to meet with me again, in spite of the difficulties presented by your own many commitments during this present visit to Europe and Italy, and by my own departure tomorrow morning for a meeting with young people in Switzerland.

"You are visiting Italy to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Rome and to honour the memory of the many American soldiers who gave their lives for their country and for the freedom of the peoples of Europe.

"I join you in recalling the sacrifice of those valiant dead and in asking the Lord that the mistakes of the past, which gave rise to appalling tragedies, may never again be repeated. Today I too think back with great emotion on the many Polish soldiers who died for the freedom of Europe.

"Our thoughts also turn today to the 20 years in which the Holy See and the United States have enjoyed formal diplomatic relations, established in 1984 under President Reagan. These relations have promoted mutual understanding on great issues of common interest and practical cooperation in different areas. I send my regards to President Reagan and to Mrs Reagan, who is so attentive to him in his illness. I would also like to express my esteem for all the Representatives of the United States to the Holy See, together with my appreciation for the competence, sensitivity and great commitment with which they have favoured the development of our relations.

"Mr President, your visit to Rome takes place at a moment of great concern for the continuing situation of grave unrest in the Middle East, both in Iraq and in the Holy Land. You are very familiar with the unequivocal position of the Holy See in this regard, expressed in numerous documents, through direct and indirect contacts, and in the many diplomatic efforts which have been made since you visited me, first at Castelgandolfo on 23 July 2001, and again in this Apostolic Palace on 28 May 2002.

"It is the evident desire of everyone that this situation now be normalised as quickly as possible with the active participation of the international community and, in particular, the United Nations Organisation, in order to ensure a speedy return of Iraq's sovereignty, in conditions of security for all its people. The recent appointment of a Head of State in Iraq and the formation of an interim Iraqi government are an encouraging step towards the attainment of this goal. May a similar hope for peace also be rekindled in the Holy Land and lead to new negotiations, dictated by a sincere and determined commitment to dialogue, between the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

"The threat of international terrorism remains a source of constant concern. It has seriously affected normal and peaceful relations between States and peoples since the tragic date of 11 September 2001, which I have not hesitated to call "a dark day in the history of humanity".

"In the past few weeks other deplorable events have come to light which have troubled the civic and religious conscience of all, and made more difficult a serene and resolute commitment to shared human values: in the absence of such a commitment neither war nor terrorism will ever be overcome. May God grant strength and success to all those who do not cease to hope and work for understanding between peoples, in respect for the security and rights of all nations and of every man and woman.

"At the same time, Mr President, I take this opportunity to acknowledge the great commitment of your Government and of your nation's numerous humanitarian agencies, particularly those of Catholic inspiration, to overcoming the increasingly intolerable conditions in various African countries, where the suffering caused by fratricidal conflicts, pandemic illnesses and a degrading poverty can no longer be overlooked.

"I also continue to follow with great appreciation your commitment to the promotion of moral values in American society, particularly with regard to respect for life and the family.

"A fuller and deeper understanding between the United States of America and Europe will surely play a decisive role in resolving the great problems which I have mentioned, as well as so many others confronted by humanity today. May your visit, Mr President, give new and powerful impetus to such cooperation.

"Mr President, as you carry out your lofty mission of service to your nation and to world peace, I assure you of my prayers and cordially invoke upon you God's blessings of wisdom, strength and peace.

May God bestow peace and freedom upon all mankind!"

President Bush's reply

"Your Holiness, thank you very much for receiving Laura and me and our Delegation. I bring greetings from our country where you are respected, admired and greatly loved. I also bring a message from my Government that says to you, Sir, that we will work for human liberty and human dignity in order to spread peace and compassion; that we appreciate the strong symbol of freedom that you have stood for and we recognise the power of freedom to change societies and to change the world.

"And so, Sir, we are honoured to be here; perhaps the best way I can express my country's gratitude to you and our respect to you is to present to you the Medal of Freedom from America and, if you might, allow, I'd like to read the citation attached to that honour.

A devoted servant of God, His Holiness Pope John Paul II has championed the cause of the poor, the weak, the hungry, and the outcast.

He has defended the unique dignity of every life, and the goodness of all life.

Through his faith and moral conviction, he has given courage to others to "be not afraid" in overcoming injustice and oppression.

His principled stand for peace and freedom has inspired millions and helped to topple communism and tyranny.

The United States honours this son of Poland who became the Bishop of Rome, and a hero of our time.

Where, exactly, did the Pope say that?

He said that here:

Less than I expected, frankly ...

=== I also continue to follow with great appreciation your commitment to the promotion of moral values in American society, particularly with regard to respect for life

Save for that of those human lives from which we get our "stem cell lines"

=== and the family

Someone needs to hip JPII to the meaning of "civil unions"

Let the man die in peace..he has no need to know this crazy shit going on in the name of freedom. It is up to us to put a stop to it and if we don't..... it will never be JPs fault.

You think he forgot already his last visit from Bush to discuss ESCR?

I'm not ready to believe that -- simply because he's too ill and drugged as a rule to communicate clearly or stay alert through a two-hour Mass -- that he's mentally feeble as well.

I think President Bush did very well with the Pope.Do you realize that anti-life Kerry would be afraid to sit down with the Pope?

The Pope makes his appeal for peace to the United States, because he knows that we are one of the few societies that will give heed to such an appeal. Making such an appeal to the various ruthless thugocracies throughout the world would be wasted breath.

Good point. What words would the Pope have for Kerry? Remember when Mother Teresa talked about respect for unborn life in the Clinton White House? She was gentle in her delivery, but her words cut like a knife.

"And where was this senile old idiot when Saddam was murdering and torturing his people? He needs to shut his pie-hole and leave politics to the pros."

Is the Pope that dense or is he totally out of the loop and brainwashed by liberal media (CNN or the Italian equivalent) being fed into the Vatican? President Bush and the U.S. (and Italy) have freed millions of people in darkness and brutality and not killed hardly any innocents. This Pope is Polish for Peter's sake and he knows of Nazis and W.W.II and Saddam being the exact same thing... I'm talking mass graves, shredded people, WMD (that are now proven to exist), terrorism that we are fighting against (not conquering Iraq for permanent occupation like Soviets or something). Does the Pope not know that Afghanistan now has a hope and future that we are fighting and dying to bring the same also to Iraq? President Bush ought to show him the video of Saddam's torturing shown on only CBN. That video should be shown in public on big screens in every protest so that there is nowhere to look that you don't see the arms, legs and heads chopped off. That should shut the Pope up. I'm thinking the Pope is not the man of God so much anymore as he is the man of sin...

Oh give it a rest. Take that doctrine crap and shove it. Not once has he or any of the rest of the so called "holy" men said a damn thing about the horrors committed by Saddam, or any of the rest of the Muslim pukes. How about the Holy See's ignoring of the atrocities of Hitler ? George Bush is a much greater man than any of the entire hierarchy of the "Universal" church.

See this is where you are WRONG, this Pope prays for peace....something that we can not imagine today...he is a visionary where you call him names....I respect this Pope and I see where he thinks and comes from and you should do similar as we all beg for peace. At least I do while you call him names....
