Nah...can't find the editorial online...the author had a bear come up to the house and couldn't frighten it off, not even by firing pistol rounds into the dirt around it...so he pulled out his bear rifle and killed it.
His logic was that he and his wife routinely hiked the wilderness around their cabin and they couldn't (wouldn't)take the chance on meeting that particular bear out in the woods.
