Amid tight security measures, thousands of demonstrators marched through Rome on Friday to protest the visit of President Bush to Italy and that country's participation in the war in Iraq. Protesters swarmed the streets of central Rome after Bush met with Pope John Paul II, one of the strongest critics of the war. Police estimated the number of demonstrators at 500,000.

The authorities estimated about 6 to 7 thousand people.
This is one of the best examples how easy it is to fool people with polls and e-vote - it's possible to give numbers that can be visually checked from 6,000 to 500,000 ... http://www.corriere.it/Primo_Piano/Cronache/2004/06_Giugno/04/corteo.shtml

Probably just a CNN decimal point error.

but the police reckon there were more like 25,000. ... ---------- Well, follow me carefully here.
If you multiply the number 25,000 by 19, you get almost 500,000. See?
And then if you multiply the almost 500,000 by the number 2, you get virtually a million man march! See?
Yeah, a Million Man March. That's the ticket!
See?

They probably had the same guy counting that counted the crowd at the latest assault weapons demonstration in DC.

CNN has hired Louis Farrakhan as director of crowd estimates.

"CNN: Police estimated the number of demonstrators at 500,000.
BBC: "but the police reckon there were more like 25,000."
Perfectly understandable. The CNN number indicated the number of fingers and toes of the protesters."
No, no, no. That is the number of registered Democrats that were at the protest. Sure most are dead, but they were there in spirit, so that counts.

Why believe BBC over CNN? The both lie, right?

And what do you get if the million man march and the million mom march happen on the same day ?????
I'll leave the answer up to your mathematical wizardry...

Probably just a CNN decimal point error. More likely a metric system conversion error.

My perfectly sensible theory:
They stole the idea from Michael Moore:
On the CNN show Moneyline, Moore was asked about the glaring inaccuracies in
Stupid White Men. His response was:
"How can there be inaccuracy in comedy?"
CNN adopted this philosophy and secretly changed their name to Comedy News Network.
