Women LOVE to have the doors opened for them and all the rest of it. Don't let any witchy, immature teeny bopper tell you differently.
Come to suburban Middle America. When the young gals in my office complain about impolite males in the big city, I tell them they are looking for dates in the wrong places. I go to the local post office about twice a day and someone ALWAYS opens the door for me! I've had the door opened by 80 year olds and 16 year olds and everything in between! And I return the favor whenever possible. It's always a smile and a "good morning" and a "thank you" and a "have a nice day."
Really!
People from the mid-west are definitely more courteous and kind-at least from outward exhibition-than the people you'll meet in most major metropolitan areas.
I had restrain my laughter when one of my mother's friends came to visit New York City and was perplexed by some of the unique habits displayed by the natives.
For example, her consternation at the people who jaywalked with impunity. That really threw me for loop. The concept that there are people who actually routinely obey traffic laws was lost on me.
It's definitely a different sort of culture there. I'm not necessarily saying it is better or worse; you can judge the merits and demerits for yourself.
My only point is that the two cultures are different. Very, very different.
