I think some of it may be due to the high-pitched voice of Geddy Lee (especially in the earlier years). My wife can't stand the higher notes, and I read a study where most women like bass sounds more than the treble. Chicks loved Journey (in the late 70's and early 80's), and Steve Perry's voice was pretty darn high-pitched.
