State losing asparagus war to Peru plants

Washington's last and largest asparagus cannery will close next year as the work moves to cheaper plants in Peru.

The 70-year-old cannery, billed as the world's largest, employs 1,000 workers during summer months and about 50 year-round, said Seneca Foods, owner of the plant in Dayton, Columbia County. Its carrot-canning line also will close next year.

Known for its 300-foot statue of the Jolly Green Giant, the plant opened in 1934 and has been a mainstay of the economy in Dayton, which had an estimated 2002 population of 2,715.

"This is a huge hit," said Jennie Dickinson, executive director of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. "As a private employer and a taxpayer, they're our biggest."

By far the best asparagus I ever had was white asparagus in Darmstadt, Germany.

Somehow I just knew this was Bush's fault.

Life will be so much better for us all in the New Peoples Republic of Amaraka.

"A large purchase by the government this year was the main factor keeping demand and prices up. "

I love fresh aspasagus, but the price is just too high to afford it very often.

This is the results of Farm Welfare. The government guarantees farmers net incomes twice that of non-farmers, so they feel free to raise the minimun wage, knowing that the government will factor the higher labor costs into crop support programs.

I'm planting my own this year for the first time. I bought the strain "New Jersey Supreme" on the internet and it's growing nicely. I can't take any this year but could take limited amounts from my garden next year. After that the plants will produce for about 15 to 20 years before reaching their life expectancy.

With this decrepit economy the way it is, I'm surprised Willie that you would have to lower your dialog to asparagus..../s

You Sir, are a prime candidate for the wrath of Willie!

Growing your own will only help proliferate the loss of American jobs!

Now don't pat yourself on the back for that bit of knowledge, for isn't EVERYTHING Bush's fault?

I planted 17 crowns and gave away another 8. The total cost of the crowns was $19.00. I should have asparagus for the next 20 years.

I tried planting some but it just doesn't work in Houston. You can't grow asparagus under palm trees.

That IS impressive, however to some all that can be seen by your self serving efforts to be productive and maintaining a mindset of gaining more self-sufficiancy, and enjoying the process of it at that, is your Anti-American worker attitude and your lack of compassion for displaced workers.

Not surprising. My most recent issue of CFO magazine is devoted to 'outsourcing'; how to, what not to do, pitfalls (bad PR), and how to personally benefit from it (increased bonus and salary from reducing costs). The editors of the magazine think 'outsourcing' is good for companies & great for the economy. Just more ammo for us CFO-types to make more $$$$ personally.

There was an asparagus plant that somehow seeded itself in my aunt's flower garden in Massachusetts. Every year we got super asparagus off it. No maintenance required, either.

At the rate we're going, it won't be long before ALL of us are reduced to growing our own out of necessity.
