CIA boss victim of ancient Albanian jinx?

TIRANA (Reuters) - While heavyweight pundits ponder the 'real reasons' behind CIA (news - web sites) director George Tenet's sudden resignation, a Tirana newspaper has offered a typically whimsical explanation: he fell victim to an ancient Abanian curse.

The Korrieri daily said on Friday the Central Intelligence Agency (news - web sites) chief's resignation on Thursday fell a day before he had been due to visit Albania.

"If he had not planned a visit to Albania, probably he would have not been struck by the curse of the Pojan jinx," editor Alfred Peza said in his column, citing a supposed evil spirit that jinxed the villagers of Pojan back in the mists of time.

Tenet was clearly felled by the jinx, wrote Peza, as were the late Soviet Army Marshal Georgy Zhukov, former West German foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher and others who were demoted or quit after becoming involved with Albania.

Tenet's resignation, the paper said, had prevented him visiting the Albanian birthplace of his mother who, by his own account, escaped from southern Albania on a British submarine just as the Iron Curtain was closing after World War Two.

But it might not have been his first trip to the former Stalinist bastion. Previous reports, also unconfirmed, say Tenet twice visited Albania, incognito, in the early 1990s.

How's this for as the reason behind Tenet's resignation? Lol! :)

Well, for the most part this is comical. But I'm intrigued by the little nugget at the end:

"Previous reports, also unconfirmed, say Tenet twice visited Albania, incognito, in the early 1990s."

Readers who cast their minds back will understand that these were the early clinton years. What was Tenet's mission to Albania?

I am of the party who believe that clinton fought the war in Yugoslavia on the WRONG SIDE. One reason he did so is, no doubt, political correctness. Liberals love to fight on the wrong side and against the national interest. But another reason may have been drugs. Clinton not only helped bring the Muslims into the underbelly of Europe; he also managed to double the Albanian drug trade to Europe.

This would not be the first time that our intelligence agencies have been involved in drug smuggling, sometimes for good purposes and sometimes not. And clinton was involved in the drug trade all his life, from the time he was a teenager working with the Dixie Mafia in Hot Springs to the days of Mena Airport and Tyson chickens.

I've always thought he probably got a rakeoff from the Albanian drug trade, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Tenet was one of his agents who arranged it.

I was also rather surprised by this article as I was unaware of Tenet's Albanian connection. Maybe he was in Albania duringthe 90's just to visit family members seeing his mother was Albanian? But then why visit incognito if you have legitimate reasons for being there? It would be interesting to see if there is more information about his involvement in the Balkans.

Makes as much sense as any other explanation out there.

Tenet is of Greek ancestory from Northern Epirus, which is inside the borders of Albania. The other half of ancient Epirus now called Southern Epirus lies in Greece.

If "early nineties" means before 1995, Tenet started the 1990's as an aide to Senator David Boren (D, OK). Boren made him staff director of a Senate committe with oversight of the CIA budget. After Clinton came in, he became transition director for intelligence issues in the new administration, followed shortly thereafter by a post in the NSC as senior director of intelligence.

This guy was never an "operator" and I doubt he had any cloak-n-dagger spook stuff going on in Albania. Most of the time he was dealing with budget oversight, and figuring out if various CIA efforts would stand up to legal and/or legislative challenges. Don't forget how the Clintonites liked to hamper intelligence efforts by bogging them down in a legal quagmire....

How can you say Clinton fought the war in Kosovo on the "wrong side"? Clinton fought the war in Kosovo ON HIS SIDE -- it makes perfect sense to me... remember which side Clinton is ON!
