I don't know if this is the definition of irony, but it sure is funny. A Phillies fan has filed a complaint with Major League Baseball and the players' union because the Padres' Phil Nevin said some bad words in response to the fan's heckling.
Daniel Ribecchi is so upset -- his 8-year-old daughter was with him when the incident occurred after Nevin struck out during a May 23 game at Citizens Bank Park -- that he's hired an attorney.
I'm not condoning Nevin's reportedly X-rated response -- he has a history of hotheaded exchanges with fans, and Padres GM Kevin Towers was concerned enough about the latest blowup to suggest the possibility of anger management counseling.
But let's consider the sensitive Mr. Ribecchi for a moment. He says Nevin made his little girl burst into tears. Uh huh. How come we think she simply may have been embarrassed being in the same ballpark with ol' dad the heckler?
Sure, suing the other guy has pretty much surpassed baseball as America's true national pastime. But instead of crying to a lawyer, pal, how about taking a little personal responsibility and realizing that when you act like a jerk ... stuff happens.
If not for yourself, then do it for the rest of the Philadelphia faithful -- after all, they have a reputation to consider.

It just reminds me that half the people have below average intelligence.
And I'm not so good at ending my italics tags in HTML...
If this jerk was so worried about upsetting his daughter, he should have thought about that before opening his mouth and heckling Nevin.
