This is a loaded deck. What extraordinary contribution has Karol Wojtyla made to protect, defend or improve the living conditions of America during his pontificate that could justify his receiving an award intended for extraordinary American contributions!!!
I find it interesting how so many could adore the man (Pope) yet discount what he says (I respect him a great deal).

Some have said the Pope always is against war....I'd like to see a quote about him being against the Afghan war then. That would prove that point.

Well, for one (at that's all that's required in this case), he was instrumental in brining down the Soviet Union...an event that made this country immesurably safer.
