The timing is actually pretty good - the election is still a long way off in terms of news cycles . . . UNLESS the resignation is prompted by messy realities regarding Plame, Chalabi, etc., which could linger deep into the election cycle, and which the media - ever searching for a new Watergate - will exploit to the max.

There wasn't even a hint that this was going to happen today - no leaks, no stories or "tips" that I saw. Something is brewing, this guy didn't just wake up this morning and say "I think I'll resign today for family and financial reasons".
