SEATTLE -- Bright flashes and sharp booms were reported in the skies over the Puget Sound area early Thursday, and aviation officials said a meteor may have been the source.
An early report that a meteor might have hit near Chehalis, about 90 miles south of the city, turned out to be false, a University of Washington scientist who specializes in meteorites said.
Toby Smith, a lecturer in astronomy, told The Associated Press scientists were looking into the cause of the skybursts reported over a wide area about 2:40 a.m.
Witnesses along a 60-mile swath of the sound from near Tacoma to Whidbey Island and as far as 100 miles to the east near Ellensburg said the sky lit up brightly, and many also reported booming sounds as if from one or more explosions.

"Testing of certain aircraft?"
20 years ago this August, my sons and I were deer hunting in the Lost Cost area of N California. As we were jumping over a small creek, a plane broke the sonic barrier, probably a Black Bird.
My first thought was one of my sons accidentally fired his deer rifle. That didn't happen. My younger son ended up tripping and falling back into the little creek. He was really scared. The older son looked up as the boom was continuing as saw a black speck disappear in the WNW sky.
Later that afternoon the foreman of the ranch said that it probably was a Black Bird from Beale Air Force Base, north of Sacramento. He said that it wasn't the first time that a blackbird pilot went to full power and the sound wave came back over the coast.
Having said that, in 30 years we have heard and seen some weird stuff coming from Vandenberg Air Force Base or returning. Usually that was on the coast of N. Califonia north of San Francisco. A few days after the event, the San Francisco Chronicle would have an article buried somewhere telling that the noise and lights came from Vandenberg or were headed back.
Does give one pause...
Cooool as I posted on our state of Oregon board it's the top news story.
Laughing at all the local callers and their "version" of the huge falling star.
They showed a clip from a security camara and boy it did light up the sky.
One guy said the birds woke up and flew out of the trees. Psyche the birds out. Sunrise at 2:30 AM.
KV is having pain related problems and I tried my best to refocus him by putting on the tin foil claiming Alians lil Green guys! N. Korea INCOMING!
He wasn't amused.
I know if not already a fellow Freeper will get the NASA Pics up.
I would love to have a piece of space rock.
A similar thing happened to me 40 years ago. I was hunting deer in the Northern part of lower Michigan.
A B-58 did a supersonic run very close to tree top level.
I had to return to camp for clean long johns.
By the way I didn't see either of those two blackbirds that weren't in Oki in the 60's.
ROFLMAO
Well, Dang! - I slept right through it!
I'll second that request.
Cute.
Hey...it's just like MY neighborhood!

As usual, I can't comment on what you post. However, in August, fortunately, we weren't wearing long johns even on the coast in N. California.
Yeah, we get those pretty much daily where I am, too.
Only here, we call 'em "mortars" and "rockets." :-)
hmmm -- let's see -- they are within range of Red Chinese nuclear missiles - thanx to bill & hillary clinton and the dnc ..... Maybe some of our so-called useless air defense systems took them out?
We will never know...
1. if the attack were thwarted, the news media would not give America credit
2. the administration would not want to instill mass panic on the left-coast (why not? let them kill each other off - 9th circus?)
I was just being a smart Alec this morning.
(not posted on their website yet, but may later komo news)
I wish I had seen it! Phooey.
So that's what happened. Wife came back downstairs from going the bathroom and asked if I had turned the lights on and off. After saying no two or three times I heard a rumbling noise that lasted about 10 seconds or more. It sounded like someone was dragging a shopping cart across our roof.
I said, "WTF was that", unlocked the gun safe and just waited for the dog to bark. He didn't but the neighbor's dog, who lives outside, woofed about 10 times.
I took a look out the windows and didn't see anything so I went back to bed.
I don't know how you can stand being away from your cats.
My Dogs are my best friends they go everywhere with me.
Be safe. Hurry Home.
