Flashes, booms reported over Western Washington
Seatle Post Int ^ | 6/3/2004 | AP

SEATTLE -- Bright flashes and sharp booms were reported in the skies over the Puget Sound area early Thursday, and aviation officials said a meteor may have been the source.

An early report that a meteor might have hit near Chehalis, about 90 miles south of the city, turned out to be false, a University of Washington scientist who specializes in meteorites said.

Toby Smith, a lecturer in astronomy, told The Associated Press scientists were looking into the cause of the skybursts reported over a wide area about 2:40 a.m.

Witnesses along a 60-mile swath of the sound from near Tacoma to Whidbey Island and as far as 100 miles to the east near Ellensburg said the sky lit up brightly, and many also reported booming sounds as if from one or more explosions.

"But we really do have flashes and booms here regularly."

Yup. I remember those kinds of flashes and booms from back in '66.

"That huge area of Siberia that was levelled back in the early 1900s was attributed recently to a large meteor detonation. I don't think that they ever found craters or where anything actually hit the ground."

1908 Tunguska Explosion (Reconstructing An Asteroid Impact From Eyewitness Accounts)

Residents of London reported being able to read the newspaper outside at midnight (for 4 days) it was so bright.

Scientists are puzzled by the native reports that they heard the asteroid/meteorite before they saw it.

The flash would have lasted a few minutes, so something else would have been the cause of the extended duration bright sky. Perhaps light from a huge forest fire reflecting off atmospheric dust.

A B-58 did a supersonic run very close to tree top level.

Same happened to me in 1962, right smack in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis (the day after Kennedy gave the ultimatum, I think). Most folks thought WWIII was about to begin at any minute.

I was sitting in the middle of a high school class when one of the local ANG F-102's punched the after burners right over the city. (They were allowed to do that then and the Air Force just paid for any broken windows.) Kids were diving under their desks and some of the girls started crying.

It's funny thinking back on it now. I'd heard sonic booms many times before that, but that one really was memorable. ;~))

Tunguska: A Ball Of Light (And, other cock-a-mamie ideas)

"There is another possible explanation to the Tunguska explosion. It is possible that this object was a ball-of-light made perhaps by the sun, or less likely by another star, or even less likely -- but possible -- by man!"

Yeah there have been a few. Here's one from KOMOTV.com:

Flash

What I want to know is, how can something as small as a computer monitor light up the sky over such a large area?

"Nothing personal, but I wish somebody would modify the title to say Washington State or remove this from breaking news. I almost had a heart attack when I looked at the Breaking News Sidebar. I thought we under attack."

"Western Washington" is like saying "Upstate New York" or "Southern California." We're just not as well known. Perhaps FR will help correct that through such threads as this. I've not heard of DC having a western side, eastern, northern, etc.

I note you are from Connecticut and can understand your concern. It's a big country.

Why does the movie "The Core" come to mind? Or maybe the Poles are shifting and that's why Tenet resigned. He is abondoning ship to live the rest of his days with his family (a.k.a. Deep Impact). Where is Art Bell when you need him...? And why hasn't Ed Dames told us about this...?

Lighting is not seen from Washington into southern Canada.
It was NOT thunder and lightning.

I didn't say it was thunder and lighting; I think it was a meteor, but I didn't want to be dogmatic and say it couldn't be thunder and lightning. It's possible that there could be thunder storms over the entire Puget Sound area, all the way to Canada. But I think it's unlikely, because the skies were clear.

About seven-eight years ago there were reports of people in the Seattle area waking up in the middle of the night and finding people (?) dressed as clowns in their bedrooms. I almost called Art Bell about those reports.
