...And yes a carrier would make it through a nasty hurricane at sea...

A typhoon in 1967 knocked a screw off the Coral Sea, and screwed up the flight deck... it spent weeks in Japan, for repairs. I was on a DD, and we were forced to stay there, too... boohoo!

Does anyone remember it?

Yes and it was harrowing and yes the ship made it through the hurricane. Most planes were sent to safety as were many other components of the carrier battle group but the ships that could went to sea.
Better there then getting destroyed by debris in port.
