Hmmm ... pilot to be named later? I wonder what Chuck Yeager is doing that day? ;-)
To: BurbankKarl
The pilot of the up-coming June sub-orbital space flight will become the first person to earn astronaut wings in a non-government sponsored vehicle, and the first private civilian to fly a spaceship out of the atmosphere. Another first for California. I wish the the best of luck.
Unlike any previous manned space mission, the June flight will allow the public to view, up close, the takeoff and landing as well as the overhead rocket boost to space. This will be an historic and unique spectator opportunity. Information for the general public on attending the event is available at http://www.scaled.com
We are planning to attend. This is real history.

Wanna bet that if
SpaceShipOne succeeds on its first flight the second flight that will win the prize will be on July 4, 2004?

(What appropriate timing, too.)

It's about time. Manned space exploration is best left to the private sector (and third-world countries feeling the need to prove something).

How is that "other thread" related?

Manned space exploration is best left to the private sector Private sector implies private property rights. Establish private property rights in outer space, then this will happen. Space will be developed mainly in the robotic mode. Humans in space will be a rarity now and forever.

'By contrast, our program involves a few, dedicated individuals who are focused entirely on making spaceflight affordable,'...Just be sure you don't screw the pooch.

No, it doesn't apply. There is a treaty. No one will invest in your space development project unless you have some kind of ownership of the space resource.

They cannot win the X Prize until they have carried three people twice. The flight on the 21st is only planned to have a pilot - no passengers.
