The first sentence isn't true, or at least it certainly isn't proven to be truer of Islam than of other religions by Wheeler. But if the first sentence is true, then there's no chance of the aspiration expressed in the second sentence coming true. If Islam does demand holy war, you won't get Muslims abandoning jihad.
If "Dr. Wheeler" can't even keep his own arguments straight it's hard to see why anyone else should be convinced. Tell people that their religion is the equivalent of one that demands massive human sacrifice and you won't get many converts. His article doesn't succeed as scholarship or as persuasion, so it looks like he's just venting.
