Stepping up from domestic airline routes to international routes brings some perks to pilots -- like fewer flights per month -- but a 13-hour leg can really be a pain in the keister. AVweb's Michael Maya Charles just upgraded to the MD-11 and the Memphis to Tokyo route ... and now he spends his off-duty time catching up on sleep.

A Fun Read,Thanks
My pleasure. I was tired of taking slings and arrows....lol.
Pilots, like any elite professionals, have their own brand of humor, which is redolent here. Definitely fun to read.
As for whether one should be reluctant to upgrade to the long hauls, well, I have yet to meet a pilot who wasn't well dialed-in to reality. I can't imagine anyone mistaking a thirteen-hour flight for a milk run.
For my part, I'm glad all I have to do is pays my money and takes my chances. I'll leave the driving to you guys.
I enjoyed the article. Thanks for posting it.
As a passenger I've flown round-trip from NY-Tokyo / Tokyo-NY about 10 times in the past 18 years and man it is a LONG haul , especially now that I live in Kyushu ( lived in Tokyo until 1995 ) . Now I must drive two hours to Fukuoka , hop on the plane for a 90 minute flight to Narita , then zoom to NY which is a 12 hour flight , and then once in NY drive 90 minutes to my parents' place out on eastern Long Island ! With all the waiting time for flights , baggage claim , etc...it takes roughly a whole day to get from door to door .
I followed that thread for a while -- glad you hung around to post this little slice of life. Sleeping in the closet with the vacuum running...LMAO.
What, where were you taking slings and arrows, buddy... the NWA/reservists thread? I tried to explain the whole thing and one guy tells me, "I'm still boycottin' 'em."
OK I guess. It's a free country.
At least no one told me I ought to try joining up and seeing what it was like, this time. I generally don't answer those guys... there's only so much Vitamin Clue in my medicine chest, I don't wanna waste it on hopeless cases. ;)
The best part of AvWeb is (especially now with Belvoir kinda thrashing around with it) the columnists. My favorites are MMC (this guy) and John Deakin. Deak can bring the cockpit of those funky old turbocompound-powered liners to life; and I despair of learning 10% of what he knows about piston engines.

Thanks for the ping. Fun read.
