If you can not afford $260 a month in gas and your bills on over $30K a year, you have faild to control your spending and debt accumulation. Or live in expensive housing that could be downscaled. Maybe move closer to the job to reduce gas costs.
Or do what I and countless millions of others have done.
1) MOVE to where opportunity is greater
2) Go into business for yourself (even as a side project to bring in additional income.
FWIW, The San Jose Mercury New's want ads are very thin. The ENTIRE section is only 6 pages. One of those pages is filled with pannel ads saying how wonderful the Merc's Career Builder section is.

30K a year is 22K after taxes gross
$520 rent mnth (CHEAPEST in the area, not a joke)
100 Phone mnth ( Only luxery is DSL, Modem is only 15 a month cheaper)
65 electricity (avg yr) mnth (Sometimes 125 a month in December)
270 Gas (price increase) mnth , only to rise in the coming months
300 Mnth food, that is eating good, too.
not included is my tithe for church, coffee, newspapers to look for work, nor is insurance for self, about $12 a wwk, or car, $500 a yr
Nor is clothes or undewear, shoes, car parts
Tell me what you end up with, then divide by 52.
I want to see you manage up here.
THEN, loan me the money to move to whereit is cheaper.

Just completing 11-12 hours days. I live in a very modest home. I do work a pt weekend job. Where do I find additional hours and still keep some face time with the family.
