If there was a truly free election in Iraq betwwen Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and some hand-picked U.S. candidate....I would pick our guy to finish a very distant third. Hence, nobody is gonna appear to be too cozy with us.

What happens in Iraq over the next five years will depend on the back room deals we are making with the mullahs and other "leaders". We won't know the details, but Arabs can be quite pragmatic behind closed doors. Just don't expect a "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" kind of reformer. Any hope for stability depends on a "strong horse" type of persona who can keep the rest in line.
