Why allow your neighbors to read what's on your hard drive? That's as crazy as discussing your financial information on a cordless phon

I challenge you to break into my Linksys setup. Like Kansas, no SSID broadcast and MAC filtering, plus TKIP encryption, changed SSID (guessing Kansas did that too) and no DHCP. I also change the configuration every once in a while: wireless channel, SSID, assigned IPs, admin and wireless passwords.

Yes, it's still theoretically possible to break into my wireless network, but not very practical unless you are an ueber wireless hacker with lots of time on your hands. It'd be better if you lived near me or I might notice that van parked out front for the next few months while you sniff packets (make sure to keep up with the password, SSID and channel changes in that time).

As with Kansas, easier to break into the house and steal my computers.

But it is sad the way some people set them up. When I look for networks on my computer, there's one called "Linksys" with no encryption within range.

It's part of the wireless spec that the SSID is broadcast in the clear via management frames.

All it takes is a NIC in promiscuous mode to detect them, and there are simple, point and click apps for all platforms that do this for you. Some of them even automate MAC address cloning.

On this particular PC I have very little as fas as security, however there is no, none, zippo, personal information. Even the passwords are 5 and 6 letters.

Probably the best I've done for this one is to shut down Java and Active X to prevent scripting.

One of the men whom I hire occasionally can "break into" just about any pc, PGP, firewalls or not. The young fella is as a wizard. I wouldn't want to bet that he could get into yours in less than 30 minutes but the odds are quite high that he could.

One of my associates had the same attitude you do. So he bet the kid $100 he couldn't do it, 20 minutes later he came back inside and asked what file he should reveal the contents of. Don't ask me how he did it, I wouldn't be able to explain it even if he'd told me.

I guess what I'm saying is be careful because if my technician can do it, I'm sure others can too.
