But the Americans aren't going too well with introducing democracy in Iraq.
Edelman: That's true, but it's a difficult war. The Second World War went for five years. Democracy tends to be structurally weak. Dictatorship is strong. Hitler was able to mobilise several million people and chase another few million into gas chambers or slave labour. But only democracy saves the humanity and saves millions of lives. The more I see people getting murdered the more I believe that we need to put a stop to that. The murderers understand only deeds.

And why did they go to Europe then? Who defeated Hitler and saved Europe from fascism? The French? No, the Americans did.

It is a great article - however - historically - The Communist USSR stopped the Nazis. The Soviets decimated the Nazi war machine and were marching west by the time we really go into it (D-Day). Compared to the "Eastern Front," North Africa and Italy were small side shows.

These are some of the most direct and intelligent remarks I have heard on the issues that face us all. I have enormous admiration for those who fought in the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

God bless those who have learned either from history or by their own painful experiences.

May we not forget the lessons of history...

The US, alone, by is pre-Pearl Harbor massive support of Britian and by it's post Pearl Harbor war in the Pacific kept the Germans from countering the Soviet counter-attack.

With our logistical and moral support Britian wiped out the Luftwafte. We tied up some of their best Generals and whole armies in Africa, Italy and France.

And in the Pacific we kept Japan from opening up a second front against their old enemy -- Russia.

Remember, too, it was Stalin's dalliances with Hitler that allowed Germany most of it's early victories -- for by those treaties Germany threw all it could at France and Benelux.

The Soviets would have been beaten by Germany had we not supported Britian and they would only have been able to counter-attack so far to a standstill had we not entered the war.

I have no idea. I do know he despised Ben-Gurion and fell out with a number of fellow-fighters about Zionism.

He's a pretty strange guy. He's one of a handful of Jews left living in Lodz (pre-war there were over 300,000 - one-third of the population), and, despite the fact he has been personally subjected to much anti-Semitism and even had to ship his kids out of the country as they were being beaten up at school, he seems content to remain.

Incidentally, he's also one of Poland's leading heart specialists.

Absolute twaddle...the USSR was a lost cause in 1941,broke,inefficient and at Hitlers mercy. While the Soviet winter delayed the Germans it was the American and British convoys that kept on delivering food,money, tools, and jigs despite tremendous losses that kept Russia afloat.

American and British production engineers shared their knowledge and set up the T-34 and Sturmovik manufacturing plants.
