Hot weather brings on a beer drought

May 31 2004 Robin Turner, The Western Mail

THE spell of hot, dry weather has caused a beer drought in South Wales.

Stocks of Tomos Watkin OSB in bottles have been completely exhausted over the past fortnight.

The award-winning old style bitter which is brewed in Swansea has been selling at four times its usual rate.

A massive 48,000 bottles have been sold since the hot weather descended on the region.

While the Hurns Brewing Company which makes the beer normally sells it at a rate of 6,000 bottles a week in the past fortnight the 24,000 bottle per week rate has left officials there staggered.

Hurns' managing director Phil Parry said yesterday , "We have completely sold out of bottles and we did not anticipate it so we're struggling to keep up with demand.

"It is usual to see a bit of an uplift in sales when the hot weather hits but this really has been phenomenal.

"This is the first year we have been supplying OSB in bottles throughout the summer and the sales data seems to indicate that people are stocking up for barbecues at home or at-home socialising as well as enjoying a bottle or two when they're out and about so orders have just shot through the roof.

"The trade seems to still have stocks of the product even though we as a brewery are low on supplies so the good news is all our customers should be OK for the Bank Holiday.

"However we will busy overseeing another bottle run at the brewery to ensure if this good weather continues throughout June we will be able to keep up with demand."

It sure is cheap though, $3.85 a six-pack heh.

I pay $4.99 a 12-pack for Milwaukee's Best. No different that old fashioned Miller High Life.

You can get Red Dog for 10 bucks per 30 case of 12 oz cans.

You ever had it?

Never even heard of the Coors Banquet.

My ultimate preference, other than cold, is draft beer. unfortunately around here most places only carry Bud and Bud Light on tap.

Oh God, the beast. No, I refuse to drink that or Natural Light or Miller High Life.

In fact, just thinking of those is making me wanna vomit. I think Bud Ice or Icehouse are about the cheapest I can go and not hurl on the first sip.

I have Mich Ultra sometimes, it's not bad actually. A little low on the alcohol content though.

One more reason I am overwhelmed with gratitude that I am living in the USA and no other country.

I go to a local tavern where they have Michelob Amber Bock on tap after 3 PM.

It is 1.80 pluz tax for a 23 oz glass of Amber Bock.

I drink that sometimes while my wife is shopping.

The tavern is in the mall, so while she buys her clothes and what-not, I sit down at the tavern and drink beer and watch sports.

I drink Miller Lite sometimes if I worry about carbs.

Miller Lite is pretty low-carb.

That is for sure.

Beer is never in shortage here in America.

Old Milwaukee? WOW! I thought I was the poor boy here. I haven’t bought any of that stuff for a lot of years!

As far as I know the alcohol content is the same in the low-carb beers.

One of the places we like to frequent just added the mich Ultra to their tap beer, it's nice for a change, though I can't handle a steady diet of it.

Miller High Life and Red Dog are the poor boy beer.

I can't either.

Weak beer with no dark body to it just does not sit well with me.

I love stout beer.

You ever had Guinness stout?

Miller Light in those plastic bottles is actually decent. :)

I don't like the Red Dog at all.

I can get Milwaukee's Best for $10 a 30-pack if I'm in Maryland or Delaware. Lately I've been picking up 30 packs of Miller High Life for $12.00 which isn't a bad deal.

Oh I se you said Miller Lite.

I was thinking of High Life when you said plastic bottles.

They don't make High Life in plastic bottles, so I was wondering.

LOL!!!!!

For some reason Bud gives me migraine-like headaches before I even finish the first one. And for years that was the only beer I ever drank.

I cannot handle Bud either.

Busch beer is fine, but Bud is wild to me.
