Hot weather brings on a beer drought

May 31 2004 Robin Turner, The Western Mail

THE spell of hot, dry weather has caused a beer drought in South Wales.

Stocks of Tomos Watkin OSB in bottles have been completely exhausted over the past fortnight.

The award-winning old style bitter which is brewed in Swansea has been selling at four times its usual rate.

A massive 48,000 bottles have been sold since the hot weather descended on the region.

While the Hurns Brewing Company which makes the beer normally sells it at a rate of 6,000 bottles a week in the past fortnight the 24,000 bottle per week rate has left officials there staggered.

Hurns' managing director Phil Parry said yesterday , "We have completely sold out of bottles and we did not anticipate it so we're struggling to keep up with demand.

"It is usual to see a bit of an uplift in sales when the hot weather hits but this really has been phenomenal.

"This is the first year we have been supplying OSB in bottles throughout the summer and the sales data seems to indicate that people are stocking up for barbecues at home or at-home socialising as well as enjoying a bottle or two when they're out and about so orders have just shot through the roof.

"The trade seems to still have stocks of the product even though we as a brewery are low on supplies so the good news is all our customers should be OK for the Bank Holiday.

"However we will busy overseeing another bottle run at the brewery to ensure if this good weather continues throughout June we will be able to keep up with demand."

Philip Morris selling the majority of Miller to SAB is the only reason I went back to drinking Miller products. (It's a personal thing and has nothing to do with this subject)

Don't tell me it has to do with cigarettes?

Philip Morris owns many top cigarette brands.

I actually live in Texas, but I went to high school in Seattle. I have alot of freinds there and thats all they drink is micro. I went into a bar there and ordered a Bud Light and the bartender gave me a smart ass comment.

I have a good buddie who just flew down here to visit and he commented on the fact that we drink so much Coors Light but up there its micro only. I think weather has much to do with it because when its 110 w/ 80% humidity you can only drink so much micro brew.

I love micro-brewed beer.

I had some awesome micro-brewed ale in a tavern in Dallas.

Schmidt was brewed in Lacross Wisconsin I think. In Washington state the half racks came in three different boxes, one had a Deer on it, one a Bass, and one a Mallard. It was the same beer, just a marketing gimmick I guess.

I think you're right about Schmidt being from Wisconsin.

As for marketting gimmicks.....whatever works!!!

The micro-brewing scene is popular in Omaha as well.

I had some awesome micro-brewed stout at a club there.

I don't know if it is marketing or what, but Pabst Blue Ribbon is making a very strong come-back.

Cheap beer needs something to set it apart and that worked with the logger, fisherman and under 21 crowd.

Why do you think micro-brewing is so popular in Seattle?

I find nothing wrong with cheap beer.

Many of the better beers are cheap.
