and in the voting booth lack the manly fortitude to call the practice of sending our daughters to war what the Bible calls it — an abomination.

The Bible also calls a shrimp cocktail an abomination.

My daughter will never be "drafted." She will graduate from the Air Force Academy in 2010, hold up her right hand and like seven previous generations in our family, willingly swear to defend this great nation and its Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.

She will exit the auditorium as a Second Lieutenant in the mightiest Air Force the world has ever known. God willing, she will receive her first salute from her grandfather, a WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Vet.

Good point on the shrimp

Same goes for cotton poly blended t-shirts.

Wow!

Your family has given a lot to our country!

Thank you!

Good luck to your daughter!

Women shouldn't be in the army, except as auxiliaries, they shouldn't be cops or fireman either.

There are certain jobs at which men are just better. They are physically stronger and psychologically different.

Disclosure:I'm an older woman.

You're welcome. It's a family value taught and learned since infancy. Oddly enough, none have died in action in 230 years. Several were wounded in action, several injured in non-combat related accidents or disease, including my father and me (twice each.)

Good luck to your daughter!

Thanks. She's wanted to attend the Air Force Academy since she was in 6th grade. She's 115 lbs of Blue Steel now. Headed for a career in Intelligence.

Men do other things to get out of duty. Same difference.

In addition, some male military members .... even sometimes gangs of military males ....rape civilians, some of them children (like the cases in Japan and Korea). That is not something women do. Should we assume then, that all men are rapists in waiting, like time bombs waiting to go off?

That is the logic being presented by some here w/r/t pregnancy.

Statistically, we know that military persons will commit crimes, use drugs, etc. in about the same proportion as in the civilian community. So, using the logic presented by some on this thread, we should not allow humans in the military.

The best thing women can do is produce more men to keep us all safe and secure. There is no man that can do that. When you kill a man, you kill just that man; when you kill a woman, you kill all her babies.

well said William Terrell, I for one appreciate you saying it too!

You are a dinosaur, ma'am.

After a hard landing of a helicopter, in Honduras (military euphemism for a crash that doesn't end in a fireball), a 5'2" 110lb female flight surgeon carried/dragged me to the rescue helo. I'm 5'9" and at that time was about 200lbs, counting all of the gear I was wearing. She went back with a litter crew to drag out the pilot and co-pilot.

I nominated her for the Air Medal.

The myth of "equality" of the sexes needs to be debunked.

I'm not talking about equality of the sexes, I'm talking about equality of the law. I never said men and women were interchangeable, I never even came close to suggesting it.

Forgive my ignorance, but is a flight surgeon an MD?

Women do belong in the service as doctors, lawyers etc,but not in actual combat roles, working side by side with men,IMHO.

As far as being a dinosaur, maybe I am,but I feel that women's roles were more easily defined years ago,and some jobs are just better for men only.

You keep saying that, but I think the only person who has heard you is me!

Happens everytime. I'm used to it. At least I wasn't called a feminazi or DUer like I usually am.

It's a matter of averages. How many Marines have you known that were that small? More women than men on average are under 5'4" and 145lbs. I can count on one hand the number of men I've known under 140lb. and 5'. The women would take a lot longer to count.

Although, for the sake of fairness, any woman or man who can carry the weight and walk the walk, let em go. I knew a guy in high school who could bench nearly twice his weight.

Of course, that still doesn't solve the problem of men trying to protect the women in their unit. It's still a distraction. I believe same sex units, men only and women only are the way to go. If we had that, the women could afford a few looser standards. They'd be fighting next to their own.

Irrelevant. We don't admit genders to the armed forces, we admit individuals, so averages really mean nothing here. Each individual recruit will go through an elaborate screening process. If it's true, as posted earlier that 5'4" and 145 pounds is genuinely to small to be effective as a Marine (for this example) then surely the policy admitting 4'10" 96 pound men needs to be changed. It wouldn't even be difficult. Overnight, it could be changed to 5'8" and 170 if that's what is desired.

A Flight Surgeon is an MD with advanced training in Aerospace medicine, preventive medicine, and public health. In addition, we went through airborne training, land survival, water survival, arctic survival, jungle survival, and in some cases desert survival. We were trained in emergency medical procedures under all circumstances.

There were females under fire in WW II, and every war or hostile action since. The young female captain saved me in Honduras in 1985. Females weren't just behind the lines they were there with me.

Question: "Are they coming to draft your daughters?"

Answer: Yes.

Comment: The drafting of females will start very slowly. Public reaction will be tested after each step. At some time in the not too distant future it will become a matter of course and without limit. A lot of the needs of various cohesive voting blocs will be satisfied by the drafting of females.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that if we're going to admit both, there should be a common standard, an effective standard, and everyone should have to meet it.

The only way this might be relaxed, is if you have same sex only units, and have tougher standards for the men than the women. If they're going to have to fight together, the women should have to pass the undiluted requirements, not water down the requirements for the men.
