Memorial Day thread...What's your Favorite WW II war movie?
one man's opinion

Posted on 05/30/2004 4:15:31 AM PDT by ken5050

If you happen to turn your TV set on at any time this Memorial Day weekend, there's a strong probability you'll come across a World War II war movie..... the classic Hollywood genre. There are many of them, and, happily a lot of very good ones. So, on this weekend of remembrance, and the dedication of the WW II memorial, what's your favorite, or favorites, and why?

Uh no offense but Curd Jürgens (Curt Jurgens) wasn't in Das Boot (1981).

Here's his filmography; Curd Jürgens
(Sometimes Credited As: Curt Juergens, Curd Jurgens, Curt Jurgens, Curd Jüergens, Curt Jürgens)

There's something about Cate Blanchett, I agree, but she's Austrailian.

"The Best Years of Our Lives," should be at the top of any list.

I read a pretty good short biography of Sgt. York a few years ago in a gun magazine.

The movie was surprisingly accurate except for a few minor details. He had more siblings than the movie showed, he used a 1917 Enfield rather than a Springfield and a .45 auto rather than a captured Luger.

I think they purposely changed the pistol because York was violating some regulation by having the .45 and he didn't want that to be shown.

I didn't know until I saw "Best Years" again a few weeks ago, that the returning vet with the missing arms really was a returning vet with missing arms.

Not exactly a bang-bang, shoot-'em-up pic, however, I admired Barnes Wallis' determination to develop the "bouncing bomb" used to blow up the dams.

Band of Brothers is the best World War II movie I have ever seen. It's not entertainment. It's as real as war can get on the screen.

Because of its length, you get to know the characters and understand the bond they share. It's a masterpiece. My favorite character is Louis Nixon whose flaws combined with courage made him come alive to me.

What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?

Why? Because it was a darn funny comedy.

"Stalag 17" was a great movie! "Tora Tora Tora" is another that I really enjoyed. Of course, I admit that I haven't watched many WWII movies all the way through. Now might be a good time to check out some of the classics as well as some of the new ones.

There are many more great war-era films but these are my top six favorites.
