One of the ways people learn this sad fact is to marry into Islam and live in an Islamic Country. Some of the most desperate people on this planet are American and European women married to Saudis and living in KSA. They cannot leave without their husband's (or even ex-husband's) permission.
That's why I asked those questions about your friend married to the Saudi. I have no idea whether or not Nick Berg was naîve or not, and he certainly did not deserve his fate by our standards. It's not a question of misplaced trust, either. Westerners simply do not get (most of us anyway)that the collective islamic mind is configured differently than the collective Western mind.
