LA PAZ, Bolivia (Reuters) - Bolivia's entrant in next week's Miss Universe (news - web sites) contest faced calls to quit on Friday after she described herself as being a tall, white woman and not a short Indian peasant.

Ecuador and show will broadcast live from Quito on June 1.

The remarks by Gabriela Oviedo, 21, caused furor in Bolivia, one of the Western hemisphere's poorest countries.
"Unfortunately, people that don't know Bolivia very much think that we are all just Indian people ... poor people and very short people and Indian people," local media quoted her as saying in English in Ecuador, where the Miss Universe pageant will be held on Tuesday.
"I'm from the other side of the country ... and we are tall and we are white people and we know English," she added.
Bolivia's Vice-Minister of Culture Maria Isabel Alvarez Plata condemned Oviedo's remarks as "racist" and the Eastern Confederation of Indian Peoples, a major peasant group, called for her resignation.
Oviedo told local television she felt "very bad" about the interview and had not meant to offend anyone.
Bolivia was engulfed by a violent Indian rebellion last year in which dozens of people died in protests that ousted President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. Indian groups referred to him as "the gringo" because of his pale complexion and U.S.-accented Spanish.
She does LOOK good to these eyes...(and I am tall).
Confusing... not really. Everything is based upon appearance, and not actual genetics. I'm not surprised.
It's just not proper for a tall beautiful white woman who speaks English to be proud of her heritage. She should be ashamed. ...and short brown and ugly... in all fairness, of course.
And since when did the Rainbow/Push Coalition become the arbiter of aesthetic taste?
She's hot! I don't care if she's not "politically correct", or "congenial" or "intelligent."
That's not what this is about dammit! Someone needs to stand up for the good old-fashioned values represented by incredibly smokin' babes.
Holy Jesus! Look at them thighs! Oops...I can't say that...that would imply that I am heterosexual...OMG how can I ever apologise to the feminists who resemble quarter horses...oh no! Maybe the fags and dikes might be offended...Oh no!!!!
You know I watch a lot of Spanish language television for the babes - the women and the hosts (for some reason on Spanish game shows all the hosts have to be fat) on those game shows look nothing like the people in the game show audience - i.e. the models and hosts are Euro-looking while the audience and game show participants are clearly of Indian origins.
Yes you are right about the game shows. The telenovas are the same way.
Of course, I am willing to marry any woman for a night.

Not necessarily. You could be a woman. Then you would be all bull-dagger and stuff.
Wow, the picture from a distance makes her look incredible, but this close up picture... well, while she is attractive, she's still no perfect 10.
Thanks for the photo...oh yeah!
Well, if we're going to talk about Latin women, hold me back! IMO, they are the most beautiful and sexy women in the world. We can start with Brazil, where they are a mixture, or Argentina, where they are not. I also find Columbians sexy, and Salma Hayek (va va va voom) is Mexican.
Hey dude--you just GOT married!
She looks...HEALTHY.
hehehe I think a lot of guys agree with you :)
I mean, when was the last time you had a tall, leggy blond from Mexico sidle up to you on the B63?
I'm 6'2" and i prefer shorter women.
But I wouldn't kick Miss Bolivia out of the bed.
Reminds me of a night hitting the bars. I went to bed at 2 with a 10 and woke up at 10 with a 2.
