Controversial Iraq Painting May Soon Hang In SF City Hall (Excerpted)
POSTED: 5:13 pm PDT June 3, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO -- An oil painting of U.S. soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners may find sanctuary at San Francisco City Hall after provoking some irate viewers to threaten and assault the owner of the art gallery where it was originally shown.
San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin intends to introduce a resolution on Tuesday that if approved by the city's legislative body would bring the painting, titled "Abuse," to the halls of government and condemn the attacks directed at the Capociano gallery and its owner, Lori Haigh.
Peskin said that displaying the art work at City Hall would send a message to residents that elected officials won't tolerate efforts to stifle political dissent. Creator Guy Colwell removed the painting on Saturday after Haigh, fearing for her family's safety, shuttered the gallery.
"I'm not talking about the board's chambers, but somewhere in City Hall where art is usually shown, like the art gallery," said Peskin, who represents the North Beach neighborhood where the gallery was located.
"Abuse" depicts three U.S. soldiers leering at a group of naked men in hoods with wires connected to their bodies. The one in the foreground has a blood-spattered American flag patch on his uniform. In the background, a soldier in sunglasses guards a blindfolded woman.

Unfortunately, windows media won't open/play the file and I'm not going to waste time looking for the app that will. No matter. I know Guy and I can guess what he's saying.
"Would he also like to put a photograph of the young man whose head was sawed off by terrorists?" asked DeNunzio. "Would he also like to put up photograph of the thousands of men and women who were murdered by Saddam Hussein?"

Of course not, Mike. San Francisco is a staunch ally of islamoterrorists, not of Americans -- unless they happen to be on the left.
Well, it is illegal.
But, if I met the guy who did it, I would shake his hand.
Update.....good news:
"UPDATE: I just received word from Lori Haigh that sadly, she will be closing the gallery, and this will be the last show."
Hooray. She is calling it quits.
What a wimp! But then again, she is an artist.
She is closing the gallery.

I don't find an Officer Mark Alveraz or a reference to him. Can't find a better source for the quote either. I'm sure the words "Ms. Haigh claims..." or "The alleged ..." were accidently left off the beginning of the quote. If there is an Officer Alvarez.

A non-ethnic assaulter. No hair, no eyes, no rings, no tattoos, no piercings, ...Great eye for detail , this art dealer has.
Sounds like a loan shark wants her to pay up or they'll kill her. Those crazy right wingers who want to shut her down probably work for the IRS. Her federal tax lien has matured to a point where collection could include her inventory. Artists Beware!
This photo looks more like scrapes on her face and nose and not like someone punched her. I've never seen someone with nothing but a black eye that had these types of scratches and where the eye wasn't swollen. To me, it looks like she ran into a rough wall or something that scraped her eye and nose.
I agree. Looks like rug burn to me.
A real black eye.
Yep, that's a real black eye(s). I know them well. One good shot in the middle and they both go black. Mine was a badhop softball between the eyes.
ROFL~
I'm no expert here, but wouldn't the artists own the art they exhibit in her gallery? She just sells them for the artists and then collects a commission, right?
Going into the second post-"attack" week and still no police sketch in the Chronicle, Examiner or on TV. Maybe we should start raising a stink with the police and the newspapers. Where is the sketch of that thug who is still roaming our fair city?
No doubt that they would get it back if it was really was being sold on consignment(and they didn't have any tax liens). But once the IRS padlock goes on a business it's incumbent upon the third party to prove ownership of his property to the IRS. I don't know that too many SF artists would enjoy that up close personal attention from the IRS, know what I mean?
Good idea. They are in a big hurry to plaster copies of the painting all over the city from what I read. No mention of wanted posters. (except from one guy on the luxline who was confused)
I hear you loud and clear, RG. Perhaps that's the same reason those posters at Circa Art, presumably artists, didn't seem to think her embezzlement was any big deal.
