The Republican National Convention may provide a $184 million boost to New York, in contrast to a $34 million hit the Hub's economy is expected to sustain by hosting the Democrats' nominating convention, a conservative think tank estimated yesterday.
While down from the $260 million New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg estimated the RNC event would generate, the Beacon Hill Institute estimate puts the expected cost of the Democratic National Convention in stark relief.
Based at Suffolk University, the institute found the key difference in the two events is the security clampdown planned for the DNC in July, which involves the shutdown of a major parts of the Greater Boston transportation system. New York is not expected to face similar shutdowns, imposed by the U.S. Secret Service.
But the RNC security plan hasn't been made public.
Seth Gitell, Mayor Thomas M. Menino's press secretary, questioned the institute's findings given New York's still-unknown official RNC security plans.
Notice "Mumbles" Menino's mouthpiece doesn't even dispute that what they once touted as being "good for the city" is now a loser......just not that big a loser. Priceless.
And how could one estimate a profit from such event? How could one even turn that profit? There will be visitors, and they will spend money, but whatever services and goods they'll consume have significant costs, so profits would be much smaller than visitors' expenditure, and the government take (taxes) on these profits will be smaller still. Direct government outlays (security etc) for a convention would be much higher than this take, and one should consider the costs to the natives who are to be inconvenienced by the gathering.

Republicans spend money ,they are not just there protesting and camping out. I imagine lots of fund raising parties going on at the Cape and Vineyard. Of course the "big dig" gives us an idea about Boston.
Republicans stay in hotels.
The idea was raised a couple of months ago, and the T said no. Kerry suggested it a couple of days ago, and the T said no. Yesterday, the entire MA congressional delegation requested it, and the T said no. The T runs at a deficit, which is made up out of the property taxes of those who live in the area it serves, coincidentally the same people who will be most inconvenienced, losing a week's pay or having to close their businesses for a week.
I realize the T has refused three times. But this is, after all, Boston, MA. Stay tuned . . .
And Republicans tip MUCH better.
The hotels require a minimum five night stay and a $200 deposit for a reservation. In addition, Republicans are not the adherents of the "welfare mentality" that Democrats are, and will probably treat the "help" in such a way as to better their lives, i.e., a "trickle down" economy. I think Boston will have a lot of unhappy waiters, waitresses, chambermaids, etc. as the party members share the "tipping philosophy" and "respect for the little people" of their true standard bearer, Hillary Clinton.

The Republican Convention in San Diego in 1996 was a HUGE success, bringing in tons of money for San Diego!!!! I have to say that was the funnest time. My girlfriend and I went down to the main hotel and just sat in the lobby and saw EVERYONE go by. We even saw JFK Jr.! We saw all the talking heads and my most vivid memory? John McCain standing around waiting for people to come over to him. Actually, he didn't really wait, he was in automatic campaign mode and just started talking to everybody who passed him. It was weird. another memory was Jack Germond. I remeber because he couldn't stand up from his chair. Whatever happened to him? Did he die?
It won't be all bad for Boston. The drug dealers and the hookers will make a killing, as will the street vendors hawking crack pipes, fake Rolex watches and pirated CDs.
I had to look it up, I haven't seen him in a while, either.
