Activists Urge Congress to Repeal Military's 'Gay Ban'

(CNSNews.com) - A group that lobbies against the ban on homosexuals in the military says this week's campaign to change minds in Washington was a success.

More than 60 veterans and activists from 22 states "stormed" Capitol Hill on Tuesday, urging lawmakers to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network said in a press release.

The group called its second annual lobby day "the largest organized effort" relating to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" since the military adopted the policy in 1993, at the behest of President Bill Clinton.

In all, twenty-two state delegations met with over ninety Congressional offices, Republican and Democratic, from both the House and Senate, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network said. "Last year, fourteen state delegations met with fifty congressional offices.

"There is overwhelming support to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'" said C. Dixon Osburn, SLDN's executive director, pointing to various public opinion polls.

He said the policy "hurts military readiness, depriving our country of the talents and skills of patriotic Americans."

Rep. Marty Meehan (D-Mass.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, agreed: "The momentum to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' is growing and the days of anti-gay discrimination in our armed forces are limited," Meehan said in a press release put out by SLDN.

I'm all for repealing the don't ask don't tell policy and get back to the good old days of no gays in the military, period.

When I was in we all assumed we were all straight - I can't imagine what it would be like in a barracks shower always watching over your shoulder for some fag ogling you.
In Okinawa there was a dyke MP - no one was really sure but the day she was caught "out" she disappeared. Which was good. There was an SSG that although not gay liked to dangle his thingy behind an open zipper - caught - disappeared. Same thing - perverted.

What would it mean to the army if we allowed openly gay soldiers? Take a gay man - does he stay with the men or the women? What if he's Bisexual as well - private rooms and showers? I mean you can't put him with men, women, other bisexuals, or other gays.

The military needs to stay lean and cheap - all sexual issues aside - this would simply cost too damn much with zero return aside from making the gays comfortable.

Here's another group:

A.P.A.'s Society for the Study of Gay Issues Urges Psychologists To Become Political Activists

"... The Division 44 Newsletter, (Spring, 2004) published by the American Psychological Association's Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues, urged gay psychologists to become activists in supporting gay marriage and domestic partnerships...

She noted that Division 44 is building relationships with Division 19, the Military Psychology section of the APA in order to "oppose unfair and discriminatory policies together."
